MicrasWiki:Nouvelle Alexandrie/Guide to Media Outlets in Nouvelle Alexandrie
This article or section is a work in progress. The information below may be incomplete, outdated, or subject to change. |
How to create and operate a media outlet
The press, and its numerous media outlets, form an essential part of the lifeblood of Nouvelle Alexandrie. Media outlets keep up to date with the news, provide opportunities for individuals who are not MCs to participate in the public debate and are a great way to get your voice heard.
Establishing a Media Outlet
Any simulation members may establish a media outlet.
To do this, members must make a post to ✍》media-registry with the name of the outlet, how often it will be posting news (be realistic), and who will be writing for it (if there are others).
You should also have a nice wiki page for the publication, use this as an example or inspiration: https://micras.org/wiki/index.php?title=The_Times_of_Alduria-Wechua
Outlets must be approved by Administrators. They may reject a media outlet in 7 days if they believe:
- The name or logo is too similar to an existing outlet;
- The outlet is deemed offensive, satirical (to be used for content which isn’t genuine content or genuine satire) or inappropriate;
- The application is incomplete.
If an Administrator approves your outlet, or does not reject it within 7 days, you have successfully established your media outlet and can start posting under that unique brand name!
Posting Content
Press and media outlets are to post content in 📰》the-media, either directly, through cross posting or through linking.
If you are linking to a Google Doc or PDF, please make sure that the link is readable, locked for editing, and accessible to everyone. You can also use the wiki to create news content. If you have any questions, ask in ❓》questions-and-help.
Types of Content
There are two types of content:
- Meta Content;
- Canon Content.
Canon content
Canon content is content which affects the canon of Nouvelle Alexandrie. This content reports on simulation events, such as Bills, debates, party formations, other media posts. The statements, images, wording and figures used in canon content are themselves canon, meaning Deputies, participants, or other outlets can respond to them and quote them where required.
Canon posts must not alter canon as determined by the actions of members of the simulation. However, when writing posts, you are entitled to some liberty in interpreting and detailing the canon. The guiding principle is that these quotes, consequences and images fit in by adding detail. This is also done by writing in the wiki, especially in the articles that provide details about events of importance.
When interviewing others, make sure you tell them before starting that it is for a canon article.
Examples of what you can do:
- You may make up quotations of ‘concerned citizens’
- You may simulate the consequences of the Cortes' or individual's actions
- You may use doctored images to illustrate the events which happened.
If you have any questions about what content is appropriate in canon posts, you can always ask an Administrator to review your post/article before publishing it.
When making a canon post, you may use a “multi” character. A “multi” character is a secondary character you create, separate to your main character, who acts as the author of canon content you write.
We recommend that (unless your main character is a journalist) you create a multi character for journalism so your main canon character is not affiliated with the articles they write, either because they are from a different perspective or because they seek to do unbiased reporting.
Likewise, many other members choose to use their main canon character at times, such as for party media releases, personal blogs, or appearances on live shows.
Every member is entitled to multi characters. It is presumed you are not using your multi unless you deliberately say it is by your multi.
Checklist to follow with canon news content:
- Is the article or content about an in-game canon event?
- Did you tell members you interviewed for the article that the interview was for canon news content?
- Does the use of quotes, consequences and images fit within the canon by adding detail, rather than altering it?
- Are quotes created only concerned with ‘fake’ people?
- Are the quotes believable?
- Are the simulated consequences consistent with the action taken and realistic?
- Are the images used realistic and topical?
Meta Posts
Meta posts, on the other hand, are posts about the meta or self-contained affairs of the simulation itself. Meta affairs concern the running of the sim or general posts about real-life topics related to Micras or Nouvelle Alexandrie.
Meta posts do not affect the canon, so do not need to be presented to the Admin for approval. Rather, post away!
When making a Meta post, please put [META] at the start of the title.
