Marquis of Yucay (Marchioness of Yucay when held by a woman) is a hereditary title of nobility in Nouvelle Alexandrie, held by members of the royal House of Inti-Carrillo. It was created by King Sinchi Roca II in 1754 AN for his second daughter, Princess Urpi, and her husband, Prince Gerard, and carries the style of Royal Highness. The title takes its name from the town of Yucay in the Wechua Nation, a royal retreat since the First Wechua Kingdom, and its seat is the marquessal residence of Quri Wasi.
Creation
The Marquessate of Yucay was created by King Sinchi Roca II in V.1754 AN, in the weeks following the marriage of Princess Urpi to Major Gerard Skuryov-Spooner. The couple were formally invested as Marchioness and Marquis at the Palace of Carranza on 12.V.1754 AN.[1]
Although the peerage itself dates from 1754 AN, it revived the crown's long association with Yucay, whose valley had served the Wechua monarchy as a royal retreat since the First Wechua Kingdom. The grant conferred on the couple both the title and the family lodge at Quri Wasi, a residence the royal house had long kept for its gatherings. It was understood less as a grant of new estates than as a mark of personal favor from the King to his daughter and her husband, giving over to them a place bound up with the family's own history.
Succession
The title was constituted to descend by Wechua customary inheritance, which permits succession through the male or female line without preference.[2] Under the same rules, the children of the marriage hold the style of Royal Highness and the rank of prince or princess from birth, among them Princess Adelaide and Prince Jaime.
Residence
The seat of the marquessate is Quri Wasi, a lodge on the valley floor at Yucay whose name joins the Wechua quri ("gold") and wasi ("house"). Long used by the royal house as a summer retreat and a place of family gathering, it passed to the Marchioness and Marquis with the title in 1754 AN. It is a working residence rather than a grand palace, modest in scale beside the dynastic seats of the House of Inti-Carrillo at Parap and Cárdenas.
Holders
The title is held jointly by Princess Urpi as Marchioness of Yucay and Prince Gerard as Marquis of Yucay, both invested in 1754 AN. Princess Urpi, the second daughter of King Sinchi Roca II, holds the title in her own right as a member of the House of Inti-Carrillo; Prince Gerard, of the Spooner family of Highbloom, was admitted to the House and granted the style of Royal Highness on his marriage.
