Grand Tournoi du Camp du Drap d'Or
The Grand Tournoi du Camp du Drap d'Or, translated as "Grand Tourney of the Field of the Cloth of Gold" in the Norman-Walsch tongue, is a knightly tournament held annually in the Duchy of Normandie (Stormark). Historically one of the most prominent tournaments in the High Realm of Stormark, it was second in prestige only to the Grand Tournament of Southport.
History
The tournament is held at Château Laverdure, located in the southern region of the Knightly Jarldom of Normandie. Its origins date back to 1220, to a ceremonial meeting between Duke Tristan of Normandie and Duke Benoît of Loonois, Ministraut, and Finistère. This diplomatic event, known as the Camp du Drap d'Or, aimed to strengthen ties between the two realms after the Paix des Dames peace treaty of 1214. At that time, Château Laverdure belonged to the Triple Duchy, but due to its geographical enclosure by Normandie, it was considered a neutral meeting ground.
The tournament gradually evolved into an annual event, celebrating knightly skill and reinforcing feudal bonds. Over time, it became the principal venue for the selection of the Brotherhood of Leopard Knights, the ducal guard of Normandie. Those selected were granted the right to wear white leopard skin mantles, quarter their arms with the ducal arms, and serve as elite protectors of the Duke.
Events and Format
The Grand Tournoi typically spans seven days, with five days dedicated to jousting. Other traditional contests include:
- A melee (group combat)
- An archery competition
- An axe-throwing contest
- A horse race
- A tourney of singers
These events are held in accordance with long-standing customs and are designed to test various aspects of martial and cultural prowess.
Decline and Revival
Following the collapse of Stormark in 1685 AN, the tournament ceased to exist as a unified event. During this period, local lords continued to host separate and decentralized versions of the tournament in their respective domains.
In 1744 AN, under the leadership of Theodoric van Orton, the tournament was reestablished in its unified form. All Vanic influences were removed during its reformation, restoring the tournament to its traditional chivalric character.
Legacy
Today, the Grand Tournoi du Camp du Drap d'Or remains an important cultural and ceremonial event within the Duchy of Normandie. It continues to attract knights, nobles, and guests from across the region, upholding the legacy of medieval pageantry and knightly competition.
