Fossil Fuels in Caradia

Fossil fuels have, since their discovery as a fuel source, been both the source and focus of Caradian industry. 93% of power in Caradia is powered by coal or oil power plants (the remaining 7% being produced by nuclear power plants). They are also used in the very large amount of steel production, as coal blast furnaces are used in the alloying of the metal.

Coal mines have been the focus of much of the nations industry for over a hundred years. Large deposits of coal are buried under the island Caradia sits atop, and thus the lucrative business of mining for the fuel has been a trademark "big business" since the discovery of the first coal deposits near Trofegadh. Today, most coal and oil are dug in the Cearîm region.

While the government is in no way trying to phase out coal or oil as fuel sources, the percentage of coal power has been drifting steadily lower in recent years (though economists predict it will never go lower than 80%). This is because of the discovery of uranium on the island's eastern side. Research has been poured into nuclear fission as a power source, so that the Duchy can expand its industry, and produce more power with less space, allowing other sectors to grow.
