Expansion of Super League has occurred since the league began play in 2017. Super League was established as the top level of professional rugby league in the Florian Republic with 16 teams and began play in 2017. It has been expanded since 2018 into new markets in the country and worldwide.

Super League is currently at 18 teams with plans for 24 teams at the beginning of the 2021 season. Expanding and establishing a larger national reach is seen as essential to establishing itself as one of the top sports leagues in the world. Super League considers several criteria when determining where to award expansion franchises:

  • owners that are committed to Super League and have the financial wherewithal to invest in a team,
  • a stadium or approved plans for a stadium that allows the team to control revenue streams such as parking and concessions,
  • the size of the market of the metropolitan area, and
  • an established local fan base.
