Establishment of the Tellian Protectorate
The Establishment of the Tellian Protectorate was initiated in 1758 with the signing of the Treaty of Annexation and Establishment of the Protectorate of Tellia by the presidents of the two nations and its subsequent ratification. Discussions between high-ranking officials in both nations had taken place for a year before the treaty was finalised.
Since the 1754 federal election Tellia had been going through a protracted political crisis. Due to the election resulting in a fractured legislature, an effective national government could not be formed. The caretaker administration, now only supported by a small minority in the legislature, repeatedly failed to make necessary policy to address challenges facing the nation. The political instability caused out of control inflation, leading to difficulties paying government salaries and widespread discontent. With law enforcement being partly a federal matter, and funding and staffing issues in the gendarmerie and security forces, the government faced a potentially fracturing state combined with serious state security and public safety concerns. In early 1757 officials approached neighboring Sanama for a solution.
