Baron of Ausangate, styled Lord Ausangate, is a title in the Peerage of Nouvelle Alexandrie attached by law to the office of Lord Protector of the Cortes Federales, the sergeant-at-arms of the Cortes Federales. Unlike an ordinary barony, it is not held by a family or granted to a person in their own right; the dignity attaches to the office and passes with it to each successive Lord Protector. The present holder is Sayri Tʼito Waman, the fourth Lord Protector, who has held the office and the title since 1746 AN.
The title and the office
The barony rests on Section 8 of the Cortes Federales Act, 1694, which establishes the office of Lord Protector and provides that the office carries the title of Baron of Ausangate. The Act fixes the title on the position rather than on the individual, so that it is conferred with the office and relinquished with it, never retained by a former holder or transmitted to heirs. Whoever holds the office of Lord Protector is by that fact Baron of Ausangate and is styled Lord Ausangate for its duration.
Because the barony follows the office, its holder is appointed as the Lord Protector is appointed: by H.M. the King on the advice of the President of the Government, confirmed by a plurality vote of the Chamber of Peers, in which the Lord Protector sits ex officio. The office and its dignity date from 1687 AN, when the first Lord Protector was appointed under King Manco Cápac.
Name
The title takes its name from Ausangate, an apu or sacred mountain of the Wechua highlands. The choice echoes the ancient Wechua character of the office, whose holder is known by the Wechua title Apu Kalanayak and appears at the Opening of the Cortes Federales in traditional Wechua dress, so that the barony's name binds the dignity to the office's indigenous origins rather than to any landed estate.
Holders
Because the title is inseparable from the office, its holders are the successive Lords Protector of the Cortes Federales:
| # | Holder | Term |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Koya Chaupin Rimayhuaman | 1687 AN-1720 AN |
