Augustin McNeil Pendergast (b. 16.VII.1692 AN) is an Aerlan official who serves as the Director of the State Security Directorate since 1754 AN. A former Admiral in the Naval Security Forces, he transferred to the SSD in 1738 AN and became a leading organizer in the agency.
Biography
Pendergast joined the Naval Security Forces after it's founding in 1721 AN. He graduated from the Port Aerla Naval Academy in 1726 AN and was commissioned as a Lieutenant Captain. Specializing in naval intelligence, his work was instrumental in preventing attacks by Confederacy of the Dispossessed-aligned fleets in the Bay of Makkonia during the early stages of the East Keltian Collapse. Promoted to Admiral in 1736 AN, he was placed in charge of Naval Group Port Aerla.
SSD Service
Wishing to retire in the latter-half of 1738 AN, he submitted a letter to the Naval Staff in Port Aerla expressing his intent to be discharged with honors by the end of the following year. However, a few weeks later he received a letter from the headquarters of the State Security Directorate in Noursala. The letter shared a simple proposition: If Pendergast requested a transfer to the SSD in lieu of retiring, he would be commissioned to a high officer rank. William Alfe, the Director of the SSD, had been made aware of Pendergast's work in naval intelligence from his liaison in Port Aerla. Pendergast would enter into a correspondence with Alfe, and would later accept his offer by year's end and requested a transfer to the Directorate.
Pendergast was commissioned as a Sektönhep (Section Head) upon his entry into the agency. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Directorate, becoming a Ebtilengehep (Department Head) in 1742 AN and a Söbdirektar (Subdirector) in 1745 AN. During his time as Subdirector, he reorganized the structure of the agency, combining or abolishing redundant or dormant departments.
Alfe would suffer a debilitating stroke in the final months of 1754 AN, forcing him into retirement. Although only the second most senior Subdirector in the agency (William Brown being the most senior) he was elected as Director.
