Template:Infobox Gerenian district Victoria Island (Gerenian: Bare Viktoria) is the largest Gerenian island in area and population. It is formed from the bisection of the Camoleo River, in southeastern Gerenia. In general outline it is about 150 kilometres long, and varies in breadth from 70 kilometres to 9 kilometres. Its general direction is from northeast to southwest, and it is traversed throughout its length by the Barenau Mountains.

Geography

The island spans an area of 4,339 km² and rises to an elevation of 1,741 metres at its highest point. The island features no rivers, but numerous seasonal streams, two of which have been converted into reservoirs.

The island is composed mostly of granite and the terrain is very rocky with many areas eroded by the strong winds.

History

Victoria Island has through the ages been inhabited by the peoples of Treesia, Slobovia, Novaya Zemlya, and Patrova, among others.

In 2012, the island was occupied and claimed by the Republic of Gerenia. The government gave the land to the Känter Clan, led by Élver Känter, through a Subdivisional Charter. Känter named the territory after his daughter Victoria.

As a Gerenian county

The island was declared a county in early 2013. At the same time, Victoria became a nature and culture preserve: an area of 840 km² is preserved as the Victoria Island National Park, as the ruins of Bengrad (former Patrovan city) are culture preserve due to its "archaeological interest" status.

Economics

There are a few mining areas in the southern half of the island, where little amounts of marble, lignite and iron are produced. However, the main economic activity in the island is tourism.
