Discovered by Pallisican scholars studying in the Kingdom of Craitland in the early 740's WG, "The Republic" is the only known surviving document which outlines the early history of the Passasian nation. Today, this document is considered one of the most important in the Pallisican historical archive.

Before reading, it is important for the reader to understand that while this document provides an accurate an important description of early Passasian history, the dates which are mentioned are not known to correspond to any known dating system currently in existence. In order to avoid confusion which may stem from this fact, the reader may know that most of the events described within this text are believed to have occurred between 358 WG and 446 WG.

The Republic

From May of 801 until January of the next year, a very obscure man by the name of William Donnet recorded in his personal diary, the outline of what would, over a century later become the first constitution of the Republic of Passas. Donnet, a citizen of Lovely, is said to have dreamed one night of a great green field extending towards a series of short mountains surrounding a much larger one. Atop this much larger mountain was a terrible angel with wings of fire and smoke, smoking a black pipe. Donnet records in his diary the morning after this odd dream that he awoke in a fit of tears, and was so compelled by this dream that he began work on a model constitution which outlined a very basic form of republican government.

Settlers first arrived from Lovely at the Pallisican peninsula, near (former) Newvillage, in Simia of 904. The first settlers were met on the beach by a group of natives who offered them a collection of what have come to be called “ally plants,” and the advice that this coastline was inhospitable. These natives, who's tribe is lost to history, carried the weary travellers on their canoes, through swamps unlike anything they'd ever seen: huge, dark trees and deep green (sometimes red) water, strange slender creatures with bright white faces which swam and climbed trees. The red water, explained the natives, was used for a sort of psycho-active tea which they called “vagha (vah-gha)”, and the creatures were regarded with much suspicion.

At the edge of the swamps, the natives and settlers exchanged gifts. It's widely believed that they drank vagha together, and feasted on two of the cows which survived the long journey. According to first hand reports, it was a very joyous night. One John Huscker, in his journal writes that the “vagha was especially amazing.” One week later the two groups celebrated together again, this time in honor of the new town of Kingsland. Plans were made that night to send a team back across the swamp, to build a lighthouse for incoming ships. Native Pallisicans and these settlers, who quickly began referring to themselves as Passasians, worked together to build this lighthouse which still stands on the coast, 600 years later .

Twenty-five years later, Red Donnet (great-great-great-grandson of William Donnet), assumed the office of President. Heavily influenced by his ancestor's ideas, Donnet pursued the establishment of a viable free market, alongside a policy of expansion into the continent. The Keltian continent at this point was still mostly unihabited, and Donnet was very open about his desire to claim a lot of land before it became too popular to do so. The ten and a half decades of Passasian history under the reign of President Donnet's administration can be viewed in marked contrast to that of the first President, namely in that Donnet sought much more thoroughly to increase the role of the private sector to the extent that at the greatest estimation it comprised of 90% of the nation's entire GDP, whereas [omitted] found a balance at which the private sector is estimated to have comprised about 70% of the GDP. Donnet's government tended to focus primarily on defense, and industry, [Information lost.]

Under Donnet's reign, industry flourished, and so did the nation's military. Springville, in 1015 became the center of the nation's military. The naval base in Newvillage was expanded to accomodate up to 50 warships (the Passasian navy contained 36 ships at it's peak), and an air force base was built in South City. The idea of expansion fascinated him, and he talked from time to time about the possibility of establishing colonies around the continent.

It came as no surprise when war was declared against Durntkinstan after their strikes against six grain silos in Springville, in 1030. The attacks were hardly unprovoked, the Passasian government had only a week before decided to end the sale of grain to the frozen northern nation. Most people assumed that Donnet had been hoping for an excuse to go to war, and when it finally broke out, most people simply sighed. The brief war was a disaster for both of the main parties. In Passas, the recently established city of Zibert was captured, then re-captured, and South City was saved from a fleet of bombers, thanks only to the aid of a fighter squadron from Chelkran Kesh. Two days after the peak of combat, the Durntkinstani naval commander resigned. In response a fleet of Chelkran warships put an end to the war, by thoroughly devastating the Durntkinstani capital. Durntkinstan surrendered later that day.

Red Donnet though, seemed not to be done. By 1065, a deep rift had begun to form between the traditional population of Pallisicans, most of whom had moved west after the expansion in 1080, and the more liberal Passasians in the old country. Donnet, ambivalent to accusations of corruption, must've failed to notice the Republic crumbling before his eyes when he declared war against Alexandria during the World War, which Passas had no valid part of. After a humiliating defeat at the hands of the tiny Alexandrian force at Santa Gertrudis, President Donnet resigned from the office of presidency, and with his departure the nation was plunged into chaos. Over the course of the next twenty years, the Republic became more and more divided into three regions: Pallisica (Zimia, Zibert, Zidado West), Passas (Northman, Springville, Carol Stream), Kingsland Empire (Kingsland, South City, Newvillage).

The scale finally tipped in 1080 when it was revealed that Pallisicans had for years, been purchasing high-tech weaponry from arms dealers in Chelkran Kesh. The Passasian government in Northman responded by ordering troops into Pallisica, to retrieve whatever weapons they'd purchased. The issued brigade met powerful Pallisican resistance in Zimia, and after a fierce but brief battle, Republican forces were forced to retreat back to Northman, while the Pallisican/Chelkran forces conquered Kingsland and made a march for the nation's capital. A mass evacuation of the city was ordered hours before the “Siege of Northman,” in which Passasian forces were forced to surrender after only a single night of combat. Most of the refugees escaped the Laceran Mountain Range, to the east of Passas, where they established a country called Nietza, around a mountain by the same name. They'd eventually return and make peace with their former Pallisican enemies, but for now, in 1082, the Republic of Passas was absorbed into the Confederacy of Gralus (Novatainia and Toketi/Chelkran Kesh).

Passas enjoyed relative stability as a member of the new Confederacy of Gralus, due mostly to the close proximity of the nation to Chelkran Kesh, immediately to the west of Passas' western most city. Despite the prospects for the former Republic as a member of Gralus however, this period of Passasian history is mostly regarded for a number of protests against the Confederacy. One of the more notable demonstrations is referred to as the Flag Act, in which private businesses refused to fly the Gralan flag, as did a number of sea-vessels in around Passasian coastal cities.

In 1110, the Nietzeans returned to Passas from the Laceran Mountains with a message of peace for the Pallisicans, and with tales of this wonderous community which they'd strived to established around a great mountain surrounding a crystal lake. The Pallisicans, as per tradition, welcomed these travellers with open arms. The first Nietzean/Pallisican council was at held at the site upon which would eventually be constructed the Golden Temple, a Pantheon-esque structure built in honor of the new Pallisican gods.

The Pallisicans at this time did not have a formal constitution, other than that of the Republic, and though they were vocal in their opposition to the Confederacy, their was very little incentive to adopt another one. When the Nietzeans returned from the mountains however, with a basic plan for what they called the “Free Society of Passas”, the Pallisicans were willing to listen, and to discuss the establishment of this new sovereign nation. In 1111, after many months of deliberation, the newly formed Free Society was granted independence from the Confederacy.

This period is mostly known as the “Second Pallisican Revolution,” For the first time in the religion's history, a formal church was established, centered around a hierarchy of two orders of angels, and heavily influenced by Nietzean philosophy. In 1113, work was completed on the Golden Temple, a fairly grand structure devoted to the orders. With the reinvigoration of the Pallisican religion came a new interest in the ancient ally plants, such as Blood Vine (vagha), and Tarsica Root.
