2018–19 Super League Football season

Super League Football is a Florian professional football league which is set to replace the Florian Premier League, as the top flight league in the Florian Republic. The SLF is an initiative driven by existing Florian Premier League members and an extensive list of potential investors. The league is expected to include 20 teams. The teams of which are current Florian Premier League sides and 10 new franchises. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season then proceed to the end of season playoffs to determine who qualifies for the AEFA Champions' League and AEFA Cup.

The league was founded after the breakaway of Florian Premier League clubs in December 2017. Huge TV contracts are expected to be signed as well as the creation of football-specific stadiums in the country. Promotion and relegation will not be operated as other professional leagues in the country do not operate promotion and relegation. Entry into the league is by a successful application which must include a detailed business plan.

Competition format

Regular season

Football is a winter sport in the Florian Republic and the regular season runs from August to May. During the course of the season, each club plays the others twice at home and away for a total of 38 matches. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. There is no relegation in the league and the top eight teams at the end of the regular season enter the playoffs.

Playoffs

At the end of the season, the top eight teams in the will enter the playoffs to decide the league champions and qualification to AEFA competitions. The two highest teams will qualify for the Qualifying finals of the series with home advantage and the teams which finish 3rd and 4th qualify for the qualifying finals with no home advantage. Teams which finish 5th to 8th play in the elimination finals. The loser of each qualifying finals has a second chance and they drop down into the Playoff Semifinals. The winner of the qualifying finals qualifies for the preliminary finals and they gain home advantage. The winner of both preliminary finals qualifies for the grand final to determine the league champion.

Other competitions

The winner of the league playoffs will qualify for the AEFA Champions' League with the runners-up and playoff semi-finalists qualifying for the AEFA Cup.

Teams

In the inaugural season of Super League Football will feature 20 teams. Twice the size of its predecessor, the Florian Premier League. The league is open to expansion in the future and hopes that they will be 26 teams by 2020. The teams for 2018 are as follows:

  • Only 75,000 will be used.

History

Super League Football was founded in early 2018, after the breakaway of the Florian Premier League from the Florian FA, after many clubs were unhappy with how the top tier competition was run. The first season will kick off in August 2018 and will last until May 2019. 20 teams will compete in the inaugural season.

Organisation

Ownership

Super League Football conducts under a single-entity structure in which teams and player contracts are directly acquired by the league. Each team has an investor-operator that is a shareholder in the league. The league currently has 20 investor-operators for its 20 clubs, therefore each club only has one each.

Player purchase and salaries

The average salary for the league's players is $890,000 (Cr 850,000). Player salaries are limited by a salary cap to make the league more competitive. The current salary cap of the league is $9.610 million for each team. The league operates two transfer windows, however, in the second transfer window, it has been traditionally difficult to get players abroad as most leagues on Micras only have one transfer window. Therefore foreign players are mostly bought in the first transfer window. The league has a homegrown player policy and at least 8 home grown players must be on the field during every match. Failure to do so leads to points deductions and fines. The league also operates a Designated Player Rule, which allows teams to sign a small number of players whose salaries exceed the maximum cap. Corian footballer, Danijel Despotovic was the first player signing under this rule.

Youth development

Youth development is a hugely important policy of Super League Football. All clubs in order to gain a license MUST operate a youth academy which accommodates youth teams from Under 7's to Under 23's. Most Super League Football sides enter their U23 sides into the United Football league to give youth players more experience. Notable clubs which have produced quality players include Northcliff United and most notably, Dragonmoor FC who has produced players such as Ryan Clark and Sam Butcher.
