Overview

Sports in Senya are categorised into five categories based on popularity by the Association of Senyan Sporting Activities, which affects how a sports federation acts. The rating affects funding allocations, whether or not schools play these sports and visa applications for visiting teams. As such, the categories do not always represent how popular a specific sport is.

  • Category A: The most popular sports, which have fully functioning nation wide professional leagues, where the national team competes internationally. In these sports, Senya is considered to have a strong team. These sports are given higher funding, are required to be offered to children at school. Visiting athlete's visas are viewed as priority and foreign nationals may be employed as players for clubs. These sports are considered to be of national cultural importance and as such rights to the domestic league and any national team fixtures are to be exclusively sold to Senya TV and Senyan Radio.
  • Category B: These are popular sports and may or may not have a professional league or national team, but where Senya is not considered to be either one of the very best nations nor does it hold the cultural significance in the national psyche that Category A sports do. However, visiting athlete's visas are viewed as priority and foreign nationals may be employed as players for clubs. TV rights for domestic competitions may be sold privately but major international competitions must be broadcast by the government owned channels. Children must be offered the chance to participate in these sports at school.
  • Category C: These sports are not as popular as Category A or B sports but are played by a large number of participants. These sports may or may not have a professional league or national team. TV rights can be sold privately for all events. Children must be offered the chance to participate in these sports at school where possible.
  • Category D: These are sports that are largely considered to be niche sports but are governed by established federations who organise regular competition. These sports can sell TV rights privately. Although children are not required to participate in these sports at school, participation in these sports should be encouraged.
  • Category E: These are sports that have limited infrastructure and governance and do not hold regular competition. These sports can sell TV rights privately. Although children are not required to participate in these sports at school, participation in these sports should be encouraged. The ASSA seeks to invest in these sports to ensure the growth and viability of these sports in Senya.
