The Democratic Environmental Society of Senya (Senyan: Demokratik Etƨerƨkv Sosëa bɏer Sanya), often referred to as Senya (Senyan: Sanya), is a small micronation in western Apollonia. The nation borders the Natopian territory of Arboria to the north, Jingdao to the west and south and has coastline along Lake Lamantia to the east. The nation also contains two territories, in the Territory of Lamantia, an autonomous area comprising the old Fort Kolgrad region on Lake Lamantia and Senyan Arboria and Ranentsi in northern Keltia. Senya also jointly acts as a protector along with the Kingdom of Coria of the Protectorate of Tiana, an island off the coast Northern Apollonia in the Northern Sea.

Since its independence and accession to the MCS in 2012, Senya has adopted a policy of neutrality and has remained largely untouched by the global colonial and proxy wars, with the exception of its involvement in the River Warrior War and the subsequent Rivorian theatre in the War of Lost Brothers. As a result, Senya has been able to maintain high levels of development as well as booming sports, transportation, manufacturing and tourism industries. Senya's reputation as a neutral, peaceful and trustworthy country has allowed it to develop a complex economic system and establish diplomatic, economic and cultural relations with the majority of Micras' nations.

History

The Democratic Environmental Society of Senya was established in 2010 in the Western part of Apollonia by the Senyan people and other Saxon-speaking peoples who descended from the Gotzer and Victorian peoples who migrated southwards. It formally applied to join the Micronational Cartography Society on 17 June 2012[1], and was accepted on 24 June 2012[2], at which point it gained immediate international recognition of its sovereignty and borders.

Senya established the territory of Fort Kolgrad on 23 November 2012[3], with further expansion continuing around Lake Lamantia, culminating in claiming the corridor of land between mainland Senya and Fort Kolgrad, which became known as Senyan Arboria, on 21 July 2017.[4]

Senya annexed Ranentsi on 21 May 2016, marking the country's first territorial outpost outside of Apollonia, and jointly co-annexed Tiana with the Kingdom of Coria as a protectorate on 3 January 2018.[5]

Rivorian conflict

Due to increasing sectarianism in the far-west of the country, however, the River Warriors' Autonomous Region was established on 7 August 2012[6] to quell tensions between the ethnic minority River Warrior people and the Senyan government, with the Senyans agreeing to respect the rights of the Rivorian people. In the subsequent months, sectarian violence quelled, however there was widespread dissatisfaction amongst the River Warrior people, the majority of whom felt that the autonomous region just paid lip service to the Senyan government, and some small scale independence rallies took place.

During the uprising in neighbouring Kildare and the subsequent establishment of the Apollonian Confederation, Senya notified the Apollonian Confederation of its intentions to send troops slightly into Apollonian territory in order to protect the Senyan border. However, the Apollonians viewed this as an act of aggression.[7] and subsequently invaded the River Warriors. The Rivorian people, under the leadership of tribal leader-turned-general Ledari Kūkat Daga-Wæ̈ló, who cooperated with the Apollonian forces in their invasion. Despite heavy Senyan resistance, including winning the Battle of Tiga, the River Warriors' support for the invaders and the military superiority of the Apollonian forces caused the Senyan government eventally caused Senya to allow an independence referendum, in which the majority of voters in the River Warriors supported joining the Apollonian Confederation.[8]

Despite the transfer of control to the Apollonian Confederation, the subsequent establishment of Jingdaoese control over the River Warriors region has lead to an increase in Senyan activity within the River Warriors, with the Senyan government being accused of funding the Rivorian Liberation Army, an armed rebel group with the goal of separating the River Warriors from Jingdao, who have routinely attacked Jingdaoese targets in the region. This has lead to Jingdao threatening Senya with invasion, most notably during the War of Lost Brothers[9], however the Senyan government has avoided conflict, mainly by negotiating reparations with Jingdao.

Geography

Senya is located in western Apollonia between the latitudes 32° and 41° N and the longitudes 58° and 65° W, with a total area of 1,224,576km2, roughly similar in size to South Africa. Senya is split in two climate-wise, with the western half of the country being mostly flat woodland with some semi-arid areas in the south-west. The eastern half of the country is covered in much thicker evergreen forests and contains much more ragged areas. These areas of forest and mountains continue into Senyan Arboria towards Lake Lamantia, which is located at a high altitude. Along the southern border exist the edges of the mountain ranges that dominate central Apollonia. The southern border with Jingdao is largely demarcated by these mountains. There are also mountains along the northern border with the Natopian territory of Arboria.

Senya is a landlocked nation, although several important rivers run through the country, most notably the River Barnaby, which passes through Lake Tilos near Eprat. Senya does have coastline along the shores of Lake Lamantia, which allows access to the Northern Sea via the Camoleo River. Lake Lamantia is located at a relative high altitude, which can lead the lake partially freezing during winter, however during the hot summers the lake is suitable for beach holidays. The mountains also provide for recreational opportunities with hiking during the summer and skiing and other winter sports during the winter. The coastline along Lake Lamantia is dominated by high mountains which rise high out of the water. Although most of the Lamantian population live in lakeside communities, the vast majority of the Lamantian coast is dominated by rugged terrain. The mountains extend south into the rest of Lamantia and further into Jingdao and Apollonia beyond.

The Senyan government has a record for positive environmental preservation, with national parks covering much of Senya, including the Senyan Arboria national park, Tsännerlauger national park and the Fort Kolgrad animal reserve. There are also a number of regional parks and conservation efforts.

Senya currently uses two time zones, with UTC−3 being used in Lamantia, Tiana and Northern Senya, with UTC−4 being used in the rest of the country.

The territory of Ranentsi runs along a valley between two areas of mountains in Northern Keltia. As a result, the territory is split between a humid continental climate at the bottom of the valley, whilst the higher-altitude mountains on each side experience the Alpine tundra climate.

Climate

Senya's climate.
  Humid continental climate
  Oceanic climate
  Cold semi-arid climate
  Alpine tundra climate

Senya's proximity to the coast, central position between the polar regions and the tropical regions, in addition to its proximity to the mountain ranges of central Apollonia gives it a quite varied climate. Most of the country has an oceanic climate, featuring mild winters and summers. Some areas of the country (notably in the south-west) have a cold semi-arid climate, featuring warm but dry summers and mild winters. To the eastern fringes of the country is a small zone of a humid continental climate, which features hot summers but cold winters, often with high amounts of snowfall. The humid continental climate is common across much of Senyan Arboria and Fort Kolgrad.

Politics

Senya is a unitary state comprised of 2 autonomous territories and 8 municipal regions, which are granted devolved powers by the central government in Svorgas.

President

The President of Senya is the highest political office in the country. The president is elected every five years, and leads the nation primarily in foreign affairs. He/She can veto legislation put forward by the National Democratic Forum, and can submit their own legislation. The role of the president is largely ceremonial in regards to domestic affairs but they have a much more stronger hand in foreign affairs, as they have to power to appoint and dismiss ambassadors, conduct talks with foreign leaders and can use Executive orders on issues pertaining to foreign affairs only. The President's powers are limited by the National Democratic Forum, who can pass a motion of no-confidence, which would trigger another presidential election. However, this has never happened.

The current President is Barnaby Hands of the Senyan National Party, who was elected in 2010 and subsequently re-elected in 2015.

The National Democratic Forum is the parliament of Senya and is elected every two years. It comprises of 500 members, with 448 representing Senya proper, 49 representing Fort Kolgrad and three representing Ranentsi. Within each region, elections are held via proportional representation, to gather who wins the seats available. The National Democratic Forum is intentionally set up to try and avoid a single party from dominating and ensure that all views are represented fairly on the national stage.

Currently, there is a ruling coalition between the Centrist Party and Liberty Senya, with the centrist party's NDF leader Ystëna Denisenka as prime minister. In situations where one party has not reached the overall majority required for majority rule, the Prime Minister will be the leader of the largest party in the coalition that forms after the end of the election.

To vote in a National Democratic Forum election, one must be at least 16 years old, in a fit mental state, and must show signs of political engagement and genuine intelligence. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, be fluent in both Senyan and English, have a university degree in a course related to politics and pass all the other test for a regular voter.

Foreign relations

Since joining the Micronational Cartography Society, Senya has maintained a policy of strict neutrality in Micrasian affairs, and has largely refused to join other inter-Micras organisations and for the large part has kept out of larger planet-wide conflicts. Senya has only ever signed official treaties with three other Micrasian nations, namely Elwynn[10], Juclandia[11] and Tiana[12].

A major exception to Senya's neutrality has been its involvement in engagements with neighbouring Jingdao over the River Warriors region. In 2014, Jingdao, then known as the Apollonian Confederation, invaded the River Warriors and subsequently attacked the city of Tiga during the River Warrior War, before a peace treaty was signed. Subsequently, the River Warriors was annexed by the Apollonian Confederation. Senya has been repeatedly accused by Jingdao of financing and training anti-Jingdaoese insurgents in the River Warriors, including the Rivorian Liberation Army, accusations that brought Jingdao to threaten Senya with warning missiles during the War of Lost Brothers.[13]

Despite its neutrality in the diplomatic and military fields, Senya has participated in numerous inter-micronational activities, including the failed MSEO project to send a probe to Tarsica, in which Senya constructed a spaceport in Fort Kolgrad as a launch base.[14]. Senyan president Barnaby Hands is a councillor of the Micronational Cartography Society, where he has been active in passing several motions, most notably the MCS vote on the Strait of Haifa. Senya has also co-operated with neighbouring countries on regional and shared issues, such as transport, security and defence.

Many Senyan citizens view themselves as wider Apollonian citizens, with the idea of brothership with other Apollonian nations being particuarly strong. In particular relations with the Kingdom of Coria and Tiana have been embraced both by Senyans and citizens of other countries, which has been reflected in increased diplomatic co-operation, positive media portrayals of these nations, and by sports fans. In 2018, this "brotherhood" was manifested when Senya and Coria jointly established a Tianan protectorate to give the Tianan people a state.

Human rights

Senya constitutionally grants human rights to all citizens and foreign visitors and is widely seen as a socially liberal society, with same-sex marriage and adoption being legal, enshrined rights for free speech in law and for having a fair judicial system.

However, Senya is also accused of denying democratic opportunities to people with lower intelligence and has routinely suspended the publication of newspapers and magazines, though Senya claims this is only done when they sensationalise political stories or show bias in election season. Senya additionally has strong 'anti-degeneracy' laws, preventing people engaging in certain behaviours. Senya officially retains the death penalty for certain degenerate behaviours, though nobody has even been executed in the country.

Senya has been accused by Jingdao and Pro-Jingdaoese Rivorians of trying to cause a famine in the River Warriors by deliberately destroying crops by spraying them with chemicals and controlling and withholding the food supply. Senya has also been accused of supporting the Rivorian Liberation Army, which has committed terrorist attacks in the River Warriors area.

Military

The armed forces of Senya are comprised of three professional service branches; the Senyan Infantry Guards and National Army (SIGNA), the Senyan Air Force and the Senyan Naval Unit. The forces are managed by the Ministry of Defence, with the Senyan government overseeing engagement. The commander in chief is the President of Senya, however members swear an oath of allegiance to Senya, rather than to the commander in chief. The armed forces are tasked with protecting Senya and its territories, delivering foreign aid and enforcing peacekeeping missions.

Despite Senya traditionally being a neutral country, the Senyan armed forces have developed quite rapidly, especially following the River Warrior War, as Senya began to worry about the military build up of the Apollonian Confederation and subsequently Jingdao, with whom Senya has had a particularly fractious relationship with. The Senyan military has engaged in direct conflict only with the Apollonian Confederation during the River Warrior War, though did play a role in supporting, supplying and training the Rivorian Liberation Army during the War of Lost Brothers, in a failed attempt from Senya to destabilise Northern Jingdao with an aim to re-taking the River Warrior region.

The army and air force of Senya are relatively well equipped, however due to Senya's lack of access to sea, the naval unit is relatively weak, with only a few ships and service personnel based around the shores of Lake Lamantia.

Economy

Senya is a highly developed country with a stable and prosperous economy. Senya's wealth derives from its status as a peaceful, neutral and trustworthy country, which internationally is seen as a safe trading partner. Its neutrality on the Sxiro-Jingdaoese confrontation has allowed Senyan companies to trade and operate in a higher number of countries and territories than if the government was affiliated with either the Shireroth or Jingdaoese factions. Senya's economic system works with two co-existent systems; a capitalistic external economic policy and a state-backed pseudo-anarchical economic system used domestically. The system replaced the old capitalistic economic system in 2014 as a result of a referendum.

Within Senya, workers do not earn a salary and goods and most services do not have prices, instead workers work for rights, for example if you do not work you are not able to utilise services such as transport and voting, with jobs with highers profile jobs, such as those with longer hours and professionals/managers, getting greater rights than low-skill shift workers, though once one hits the age of 30 all rights are granted regardless of the nature of employment. As a result, all companies are regulated by the government, though it is possible for any citizen to apply to establish their own business. As a result, very few foreign companies operate in Senya, though a small number of foreign businesses are paid to distribute goods and services in Senya by the government.

Externally, Senyan companies are encouraged to do business abroad, with prominant examples of Senyan companies that travel operate overseas including Air Senya and AndWinSports. The Senyan government writes Senyan companies into agreements with foreign nations awarding them business contracts. Most businesses abroad follow a capitalistic approach driven by profit, however Senyan companies must follow external business conduct guidelines put in place by the Senyan government to ensure the ethical practise of business abroad. As they experience no costs domestically and usually only have to pay for overhead costs and taxes abroad, Senyan companies are able to gain high profit margins. After expenses, these profits are directed back to a Senyan government fund which is used by the Senyan Government to fund other new external ventures, the travel of Senyan sports teams, government officials, exchange students and other delegations on travels abroad. The remaining fund is used as a grant that Senyan citizens can apply for for when they travel abroad, which can be used to fund flights, accommodation and be used as spending money. This system is also used by Senya somewhat domestically, allowing for flights, non-metro train services, hotels and (in Lamantia) some leisure activities to charge foreigners for their services.

The dual system is not used in Ranentsi and Tiana, where a more generic capitalist economic system is used.

Senya's old currency, the Vontar, is still retained by some companies, who use it to prevent unlimited purchases. For example, most supermarkets and shops in Senya have a spending cap, with items being valued based on availability in the shop, with customers only allowed to purchase a pre-set amount. The vontar is not a currency in the traditional sense, but rather operates as a token and can by law only be applied per one trip to a supermarket (so a daily or monthly spending cap cannot be introduced). Additionally, in some sports where transfers can take place, Senyan clubs use vontars and a spending cap to prohibit limitless purchases of talent. In the Senyan League, top clubs are limited to a price of 300 million vontars for which they can spend on player transfers, with a sale of player adding to the transfer budget and the buying of a player decreasing it. In this circumstance though, the vontar is pegged to the Craitish Cräite with the exchange rate being 10 vontars to 1 cräite. The official symbol for the vontar is a capital "V" with a bar through it (V).

Energy

Ƨozvɏa nuclear power station is the largest in Senya.

Over 99% of Senya's energy needs are met by renewable energy sources. Senya has a ban on the use of non-renewable power stations, with strict regulations effectively banning oil, natural gas and coal from being used, though oil is permitted in the manufacturing of several materials. Senya is largely dependent upon nuclear power, with four plants operational throughout Senya and Lamantia and another plant open in Ranentsi. Together, these produce around 80% of all Senya's energy. Some rivers along coastal parts of Lamantia and the Barnaby river are dammed to source hydroelectric power, whilst some private residences also use solar and wind power to generate electricity.

All of Senya's nuclear and hydroelectric power stations are nationalised, and account for 98% of the commercial and 93% of the non-commercial energy supply.

Tourism

Senya receives millions of tourists each year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations, due its peaceful security situation, its hot summer weather and cold winter weather. Tourism is one of Senya's biggest methods of attaining foreign money.

The Territory of Lamantia is marketed both domestically and internationally as a holiday destination. In summer, its beaches attract tourists who enjoy relaxing by the seaside, as well as offering opportunities for fishing, boating and water sports. Many seaside towns in Lamantia have piers that often contain amusements such as bowling alleys, arcades and restaurants. Other attractions in Lamantia include hiking and visiting old towns such as Colgrad and King's Lynn. Another popular tourist thing to do is to journey along Senya's railways, particuarly the Trans-Arborian railway, which runs across Senya through Senyan Arboria into Lamantia, with plans to extend the line to Natopia and Gerenia.

During the winter months, Senya becomes a winter sports hub, with major resorts including Grokhim near Svorgas and Bergdorf in Lamantia. Both of these resorts have hosted winter sports competitions before. The skiing season usually last from mid-November to late-March/early-April, depending on where about in Senya one is. The territory of Ranentsi also has several winter sports resorts, though these are typically less frequently visited than those in Senya and Lamantia.

Senya also enjoys a lot of tourism amongst people visiting its national park and its towns. Svorgas is famous for its bars and live music, whilst several Senyan cities are also well visited.

Transport

Air

Svorgas International Airport is Senya's largest airport, flying to 69 destinations across Micras.

Senya has a thriving aviation industry, with Air Senya being one of the most reputable airlines in Micras, whilst Svorgas International Airport, the country's largest airport, is used by around 16 million people every year, around twice the population of Senya. Air Senya is a publicly owned company, and also runs Air Senya Gotzbog, the flag carrying airline of Gotzborg.[15]

Lamantia Airlines, based in Colgrad, is Senya's largest private airline, primarily serving destinations in Lamantia. It primarily deals with package holiday tourism, with summer destinations concentrating on coastal resorts along the shores of Lake Lamantia, with its winter operations primarily focusing upon the winter resorts in the southern mountains.

Rail

Senya has an extensive high-speed railway system that stretches across the country. High speed trains link the eight largest cities in the country, whilst intermediate lines have trains that stop at more localised and rural stations. All lines utilise overhead electric cables. The six biggest cities in Senya additionally have their own metro systems. 61% of people use a metro during their commute to work, whilst 57% of people use the railway network to get to work. The rail network is owned and operated by the Senyan government under the public company Senyan Rail. Discussions of extending the network to neighbouring countries such as Arboria, Dura and Gotzborg has been discussed, with a Trans-Arborian Railway connecting Senya to Arboria and Gerenia currently being discussed.

Fort Kolgrad and Ranentsi also have rail links. Fort Kolgrad's network is run by Senyan Rail and is extensive, linking all populated settlements with a relatively high speed network. Ranentsi's networks are older and weaker, and rely on older rolling stock. Ranentsi's network contains one line, running from Kyustendil to Kriva. Ranentsi's railway is run independently of Senyan Rail, though a takeover is planned.

Road

By contrast to rail transport, the road network in Senya is very poor. In cities and town roads often are just used by busses and private vehicle ownership is low, whilst in the countryside small paved roads are quite common, but they are often windy and more suitable for cycling. There are some motorways existing between the main Senyan cities and in Fort Kolgrad, however most people travel across the country by either train or air. Car ownership in rural areas is estimated to be around 71%, whilst in urban areas it is estimated to be as low as 49%.

Demographics

A population pyramid of Senya (2018)

The population of Senya is around 9,500,000 (roughly similar to that of Austria), giving the country a population density of around 7.76 people per square kilometre (roughly similar to that of Russia). Despite the country's low population density, the majority of the people live in urban areas, with 69% of the population living in the ten most populous settlements. However, 26% of the population live in rural areas, defined by the Senyan government as an area with less than 10,000 people. The urban-rural split is more pronounced in Senya's autonomous territories however, with 85% of people in Fort Kolgrad and 91% of people in Ranentsi living in urban areas.

Senya has a high life expectancy, with the male life expectancy being 75 and the female life expectancy being 79, however, with the sharp rise in medical technology in Senya since its independence and ascension to the MCS, it is projected that the average child born in Senya in 2012 will live to the age of 88. Senya already faces challenges such as an ageing population due to extremely low fertility rate of just 1.02 (2018).

Largest settlements

Note: Cities and towns in Senya are not defined by area and instead are commonly recognised as such as being able to be clearly distinct places from one another, rather than being officially designated as such. Whilst some cities have mayors, these are largely ceremonial roles and often have little to no power in local politics.

Languages

English and Senyan are the two most widely spoken languages in Senya and are the only two official languages in Senya. Senya is spoken by around 60% of the population as a first language, mainly in the west and central areas, whilst English is more prominent in the east, being the first language of around 35% of the population. 87.3% of the population in Senya Proper identify as bilingual in both of the official languages. Both Senyan and English speakers are afforded "linguistic freedom" by the Senyan constitution, which ensures that speakers of either language may communicate with their government, access public services and use their language in Senya without restriction. This freedom is also applied to German in Lamantia, Ranentsian in Ranentsi and Tianan in Tiana. Most government services are also accessible in Senyan sign language (SSL), which is recognised as a "recognised form of communicating with the government", effectively giving SSL the same status as Senyan and English in areas such as court proceedings and schooling.

Municipalities in Senyan Proper and Lamantia may choose an official language, however this only really affects signage and the language of instruction of local schools. However, all schools must offer comprehensive second-language study of the other official language from Division 1 (age 6), with all students required to continue to study the other language as a second language until they graduate Division 10 (age 16).

Some immigrant languages are also spoken in Senya such as Craitish, Norwegian and Rivorian, though permanent residents are required to be able to fluently speak one of the two national languages.

In addition to Senyan and English, students in Senyan schools must also study a foreign language. Most Senyan students study Craitish as a foreign language, though some schools offer studies in languages.

Religion

Senya is a heavily irreligious country with secularism being officially endorsed by the constitutions. Some international observers have noted potential human rights violations by the Senyan government in regard to the freedom of religion. All forms of religious clothing, ranging from crosses on necklaces to full-body coverings are illegal to wear in public and are punishable by a large fine and a sentence at a re-education camp. 100% of citizens report not believing in God, whilst 95% of citizens report not believing in any kind of spirit or life force.

Despite Senya's legal and many individual's personal objections to religion and religious belief, many old churches and temples remain open and are looked after by societies, often as museums, whilst the freedom of belief on a personal level is widely respected.

Ethnicity

Senya is largely homogeneous, with the Senyan and English populations of the country both being of the Senyan ethnic group. Senyans are largely tall, with the average male being 187cm and the average female being 172cm tall, whilst also having very pale white skin. Green and blue eyes dominate as does brown hair. Whilst blond hair is not uncommon, completely jet black hair is exceedingly rare amongst ethnic Senyans. Ginger hair is relatively common amongst females.

In Fort Kolgrad, people are more closely related to Tianans and Patrovans, which has given them darker hair and slightly darker (though still white skin), whilst Ranentsians tend to have the darkest skin and predominantly have black hair.

Smaller ethnic groups exist in the country, particuarly Craits (~200,000) and Gerenians.

Education

Students relaxing on the campus of the University of Svorgas.

All Senyans are required by law to be in full time education between the ages of six and 18, with most Senyans attending a state school, with just 4.6% of students enrolled at private schools. Pre-schooling is very rare, though many nurseries exist around the country where students mostly play, but also learn basic things such as reading, writing and basic mathematics. Schools years are known as "divisions", and begin in the September, and end at the end of May the following year, with December also being a holiday for the winter. Division 1 is the first year of schooling, for children aged 6–7. Divsions 1–7 take place in primary schools, with children going into High School to start Division 8 at the age of 13. Division 10 (ages 15–16) are the final year of high school, after which students can go to either an academic or a vocational college for an additional two or three years (in academic colleges these are referred to as Divisions 11 and 12). School days generally last for six hours and include five lessons of an hour length (though these are much more fluid during Primary School), with an hour lunch break and another 15 minute break in the morning. Students take subjects mandated by a national curriculum, but individual lessons can be tailored to classes. There are no exams until Division 10, where students earn marks based on a mixture of coursework and examinations (depending on the subject). Following Division 10, students must make a choice on where they should go for college.

Tertiary education in Senya is held amongst seven different universities; the University of Senya, the University of Svorgas, the University of Tiga, the University of Dyas, the University of Jogasim, the University of Eprat and the University of Moroni. Around 40% of students attend university.

Culture

Senya has a distinct cultural identity based a shared sense of what being a Senyan involves, inspired by the romantic nationalist movement, with Senyan romantic nationalism still being a major force in modern Senya. Senyan culture blossomed with nationalist efforts to achieve an independent identity in the areas of literature, art, music and sport.

Senyans are known for their hospitality, and whilst many Senyans may appear reserved, the vast majority will go out of their way to help people.

Media

The Media in Senya is largely publicly run, with Senya TV being the major television broadcaster and Radio Senya being the major radio broadcaster. Print media exists but is comparatively limited compared to other countries. By law, all forms of media have to be federally registered and must abide by a code of conduct, which includes ensuring that headlines, lead stories and all non-opinion pieces are factually correct and unbiased, and precludes media outlets from discussing the private lives of individuals (with the exception of criminal activity). However, most media outlets still often run critical pieces on politicians and the press is generally thought to be quite free and independent, despite the restrictions.

National holidays

Senya has a number of national holidays that are celebrated annually. The national holiday is Senya Day, which is celebrated annually on 27 March, the date of the foundation of the Senyan state, and is usually accompanied by big festivities across the countries. Men and women wear traditional costumes known as Znerĵarĵe. In cities, a parade is usually held, whilst in the countryside, village fêtes are held. It is traditional for marches to take place, during which schools, university students, marching bands and community leaders march through a local area, cheered on by the remaining citizenry.

Additionally, during the month of July many employers (including all non-essential public employers) grant what is known as "Summer Leave", allowing employees to take leave of up to four weeks.

Sports

Senya is known internationally as a sporting nation, with many citizens regularly playing sport. Association football is by far the most popular sport in Senya both in terms of participants and supporters. Handball, Ice Hockey and Rugby League all have large followings as well, whilst Cycling, Sailing and Skiing are extremely popular recreational activities.

Many sports run domestic competitions with Senyan teams competing internationally in a variety of sports. Traditionally, Lamantia and Ranentsi field their own teams in international sport, with Ranentsi also running their own domestic leagues.

Football is by far the most popular sport in Senya, with some international commentators noting Senya's almost religious obsession with the sport. Most businesses do not operate between the hours of 1pm and 7pm on Saturdays to make way for football. The national team is considered to be one of the strongest on Micras, having finished runners-up at the 2017 FMF World Cup and having won both the 2016 and 2018 editions of the Copa Apollonia. The Senyan League is regarded as one of the strongest leagues on Micras and has a massive international following, and players from Senya, such as Alesandrœ Danetskë and Barnaby Hands have become international superstars. Senya hosted the 2013 Copa Apollonia and the 2017 FMF World Cup successfully.

The Senyan domestic football league is one of the most popular and strongest on Micras, with the Senyan League having produced three champions of the AEFA Champions' League. Leading clubs include Jogasim Revolution, Dyas Scitenhima Ĵets and Svorgas Scitenhima.

Senyan football fans are widely credited with popularising the Ultras culture across Micras, with all professional clubs in Senya having some form of Ultras group. The most well known ultras group in Senya are Naldas, who support the national team. Ultras often using pyrotechnics, tifos and chanting to support their team.

Rugby

Rugby is the third most popular sport in terms of participants and the second most watched sport in Senya. Though traditionally Rugby Union has been more popular, Rugby League has gained significant popularity in recent years, primarily due to the national team's success. The national team won the FMRL World Cup for the first time in 2015.

Music

Senya has an extensive musical scene, primarily grown out of Svorgas. Traditional folk music is found across Senya and still remains popular, especially in traditional ceremonies and national holidays. Folk music has informed the sound of modern music, with genres such as folk metal being especially popular. Metal music in general is popular, with rock and indie music being more mainstream. Pop music, as it would be considered in other nations, is relatively unpopular. Electronic music has a small subculture surrounding it primarily in the cities.

Customs and social laws

Senyan society has a wide and diverse array of customs. Senyans usually appear quiet and reserved compared to other ethnic groups on Micras, but this is largely attributable to the Senyan belief in introspection and popular sayings advising against being loud. Senyans also consume very little alcohol, with alcoholic beverages largely being seen as fancy foreign drinks, with most Senyans drinking the natural spring waters of their lands, but also the juices from the various fruits that are found in the country. This has lead to drunken and disorderly behaviour being labelled as "degenerate" by many political leaders.

It is traditional for Senyans who are visiting others to give a gift of value, to show respect and gratitude to a host, and also a cheap gift, to show humility.[16]
