Royal Government Commission on Economy

The Royal Government Commission on Economy was a Gotzborg commission convened by Royal Chancellor Liam Sinclair on February 26, 2011. The commission was headed by Thomas Maher. It ultimately made neither a report nor recommendations.

History

Prior to the Hiatus of 2007 to 2010, Gotzborg had a developed economy with regular participation by both its citizens and foreign nationals. It ultimately formed a cornerstone of the micronation, so much that the Royal Government's available limited resources were spent maintaining it at the expense of other government programmes. When Gotzborg returned from hiatus, it was recognized that a functional economy still played an important role in national development; however, it was recognized that a more balanced, and less resource-intensive, approach was required.

This influenced His Royal Majesty August Charles II on February 8th to direct that the Royal Chancellor create a commission to examine various micronational economic models to determine which model would work best for Gotzborg's economy. Any recommendation was to be "scalable and realistic ... without implementing a crippling difficulty on the Kingdom or its people," said the King.

On February 24th, Maher expressed his interest in acting as Commissioner, citing his extensive experience, both as a former Vice-Minister for Commerce & Industry and a businessman in Gotzborg. The Royal Chancellor subsequently appointed him and issued Terms of Appointment and Reference on February 26th.

Terms of Reference

The Commission's primary purpose was to provide counsel to the Royal Chancellor on the creation and maintenance of Gotzborg's economy. It was tasked as follows:

1. Examine existing micronational economic systems;
2. Examine the successes and failures of Gotzborg's pre-hiatus economy; and,
3. Provide guidance to the Royal Chancellor, by way of report, on a recommended course of action and the necessary fiscal and technical structures/programmes for the reinstitution of Gotzborg's economy.

A report to the Royal Chancellor was due no later than March 31st.

Legacy

Maher became inactive due to macronational commitments soon after his appointment and the Commission made neither a report nor recommendations by the March 31st deadline. On receiving no update on April 27th from Maher, the Royal Chancellor made no further attempt to revitalize the Commission's mandate. The practical need for the Commission was ultimately diminished with the immigration of Ross Kilder in late 2012 and his extensive work to recreate Gotzborg's economic system.
