The Royal Championship commonly known as The Championship is the domestic league competition for professional football clubs in both Gotzborg and Victoria. The Championship was established in December 2013, after the re-establishment of both the Royal Football Association in Gotzborg and the Victorian Football Association in Victoria.

2014 will see the inaugural competition and its member clubs playing 18 times, twice against the same team totaling 90 games a season. The Championship is hoped to be competently run, with good planning of fixtures, complete and consistently enforced rules, timely resolution of issues, and adequate escalation procedures of judicial disputes to national or international institutions.

Competition format

There are 10 clubs in The Championship. During the course of a season 90 games are played with each club playing the others twice (a double round-robin system), once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 18 games. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned champion. If points are equal, the goal difference and then goals scored determine the winner. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the championship or for qualification to other competitions, a play-off match at a neutral venue decides rank. There is no relegation from The Championship.

Qualification for AEFA competitions

Talks are currently underway between the associations and AEFA as to the qualification status of clubs from this league competing in the AEFA Champions' League.

Corporate structure

The Championship is a partnership between the RFA and the VFA, however the Victorian Football Association governs the day to day running of the league and its disciplinary procedures. Ownership of the league is divided between the 10 member clubs and the two associations. Each club is a shareholder, with one vote each on issues such as rule changes and contracts. The RFA and the VFA are also shareholders with two votes each on the same issues.

As the operational association charged with governance of The Championship, the Victorian Football Association Chief Executive is also the Chief Executive of The Royal Championship itself. The VFA have stated however that should interest in the league pickup, it would be willing to allow the membership as a whole to vote and elect its own Chief Executive from either the Associations or the clubs themselves.

Finance

In accordance with Gotzborg Law, each club must be registered companies who are liable to taxes and business charges within the realm. An annual membership fee and registration fee are also payable by each club to their respective associations.

This will create a whole new financial concept and economic activity to domestic football which is hoped to enhance the gaming experience of participants.

August Charles Trophy

The August Charles Trophy

The current Championship trophy was created by Royal Artist Bjorn Olsen in 2013. It consists of a trophy with a golden crown and a golden plinth base. The plinth weighs 33 pounds (15 kg) and the trophy weighs 22 pounds (10.0 kg). The trophy and plinth are 76 cm (30 in) tall, 43 cm (17 in) wide and 25 cm (9.8 in) deep.

Its main body is solid sterling silver and silver gilt, while its plinth is made of gold. The trophy has a gold band around its circumference, upon which the name The Royal Championship is displayed. Above this is the logo of the competition itself. The plinth will display the names of the title-winning clubs.

The gold band at the top of the trophy is a modern interpretation of a crown. This is to represent the sovereignty of both Gotzborg and Victoria without providing any bias to either nations distinctive crowns.

The trophy was named after the ruling monarch of both Gotzborg and Victoria, His Royal Majesty August Charles II who has also been President of both The Royal Football Association and the Victorian Football Association since 2014.

The 2014 season will see the first club in history lift the August Charles Trophy as champions.

Clubs

Formation of clubs for the Championship are currently under application within Gotzborg and Victoria. There is no cap on either nations club participation other than 10.
