The Reindeer Herders are an indigenous assemblage of related ethnic groups traditionally located in the far north of Keltia. The Herders have appeared on official maps of Micras on three separate occasions; twice as an independent state known as the Nation of the Reindeer Herders either side of once being an autonomous region of Cerulea.

History

The Reindeer Herders were founded in early December 2007 and successfully claimed on Micras the following month. The Herders' original claim was sparsely populated, with only a small number of villages. Its first capital was Reindeer Mountain, while the northerly coastal city of Nordlighavn was its largest. The small settlements of Kotihem and Kalaallita were located in the south of the nation, with each acting as a focal point for different ethnic groups within the Herder grouping.

The initial incarnation of the Herders nation lasted on Micras for just under eight months, until its lands were transferred to the control of Tuatha Aontaithe. The Herders lived in relative peace with the Tuatha, with both peoples' lifestyles arranged around loosely-connected subsistence clans. Tuatha Aontaithe joined Cerulea shortly thereafter, in November 2008, and the Herders found themselves under the rule of their former neighbours.

The relationship with the Ceruleans saw a new autonomous region established for the Reindeer Herders, on the peninsula north of their original lands. Created in January 2009, the territory comprised a national park, a new capital of Elkheim—named after the former chieftain Elkheart—and the coastal village of Kotihavn, founded by the inhabitants of the old Kotihem. This settlement was shortly-lived, however, as Cerulea vacated its claims on Micras in February 2009.

For many years after, the Herders lived a secluded life, maintaining their lifestyle and culture away from the nearby claims and developments of new and different nations. It was not until December 2014 that chieftain Atka brought the nation back into the international spotlight by rejoining the MCS as an independent state once more, claiming the majority of the land administered under Cerulea.

This period of the Herders' history is typified by a greater presence in international cooperation, with multiple expansions of land taking place to unify the displaced ethnic groups and an entente being agreed with the region's other main powers, Natopia and Stormark, for collaboration towards stability in northern Keltia. The Herders' claims grew to include the villages of Siyriya and Ardclach, and saw its most easterly influences reach over the frozen seas away from the mainland.

Though stability could only be sustained for so long, and the Herders' MCS membership was annulled in early June 2015, roughly six months after being reestablished. Although no independent, nor dependent, Reindeer Herder territory has been created since this time, the Herders themselves have played a notable role in the lands of powers that have subsequently claimed their ancestral home.

Culture

The traditions of the Reindeer Herders have been preserved into the period of Natopian and Elwynnese rule over Normark, in spite of the upheavals of the War of the Harpy, by the politically opposed Reinherder Association and the Tuktuvut Confederation, with the association being noted for preserving the pacifist values of the Reindeer Herders whilst the Tuktuvut had responded to Haifan settlement in the region through recourse to greater militancy.
