Hurmu

Before his appointment to Hurmu, Linus had never set his foot in Hurmu. However, by birth he was a Knight of the Holy Lakes, and he had worked on double taxation issues with Hurmu Tax Authorities before. He had also voted in the Senate elections of 1690, 1695 and 1701. Despite this, his knowledge of Hurmu was quite small, and even smaller regarding Lac Glacei and the International Mandate. But he was a man who did as he was ordered and took pride in his new position.

He was received by Hurmu's collective head of state, Senate of the Lakes, on 5.IV.1702 in the accreditation ceremony. In this ceremony, occurring at the Palace of the Elenaran, he passed an honour guard in lavender uniforms while being led to the plenary hall. He knocked on the doors outside the plenary hall. Upon being let in, he saw the 18 senators sitting in presence there. Li Naomiai, the presiding officer, shouted out, "Linus Truls Thorgilsson! Why have you come here?"

"The High Presidium of the Benacian Union has accredited me its legate to the Senate of the Lakes."

"Why has it done so?" asked a second senator, this time Alissa Guadalim, a fellow humanist.

"For it values Hurmu's friendship", replied Linus.

"We value the High Presidium's ... friendship, too," said Isor Verion meekly, his face visibly disturbed while Prime Minister Daniyal al-Osman looked on with amusement.

After this exchange, the entire Senate rose up from their seats, and chanted "We are Hurmu!" loudly six times.

Linus then bowed to the Senate, and walked forward to the table where the Senators sat. He gave each senator a copy of the letter of accreditation from the High Presidium, and he placed the original on top of a pedestal in front of the table where the Senators were sitting.

The Senators all took a time to read it, and then each one of them walked to the pedestal and individually stamped two documents next to it – the documents that causes the Senate accept Linus's designation as legate, one to be kept in the Senate's archives and one to be sent back to the High Presidium.

Then Jan Spiik, head of the senatorial committee of diplomatic relations, rose and declared, "Let it be known that on this day, the fifth day of the fourth month of the year seventeen-oh-two, the Senate of the Lakes has welcomed the legate of the High Presidium of the Benacian Union, His Excellency Linus Truls Thorgilsson, Knight of the Holy Lakes."

Each senator then walked up to Legate Thorgilsson, and gave him the traditional Hurmu greeting: The Senator puts his right hand on Thorgilsson's left shoulder, and Thorgilsson places his right hand on the Senator's left shoulder, and look into each other's eyes for a few seconds, before letting go. When it was Isor Verion's turn, Isor looked down on the floor throughout the exchange, probably fearing to get assassinated in the process.

The Senate then had luncheon with Linus. Isor Verion excused himself, saying that the food didn't agree with his stomach.
