The Duchy of Liberi was a Dutch micronation. Founded on April 11, 2004 by Duke Thomas van Liberi. Its forums were established on October 4, 2004 with logistical support from the Red Antilles.

Structure

The executive power was represented by the Duke and his cabinet, the Directoire Nationale (National Directorat). The legislative power was formed by the Conseil Ducal (Ducal Council), whose members were chosen by the Liberi people.

Culture

At its start-up, Liberi experienced a small influx of Victorian and Mayoan citizens. These more seasoned micronationalists did not stay long though, as the Liberi culture proved to be very different from the rest of the Dutch Sector. Main issues were the sloppy legislation, an overly simulationist tendency (exemplified by one of the political parties, the environmentalist Animal & Nature) and lack of judicial independence (a judge was once sacked for being too critical on the government).

Relations with other nations

Liberi was noticeable for stirring up old conflicts in the Dutch Sector. When the Duke remarked that Marxgrad, the capital of the Red Antilles, should be labeled terrorist due to the Red Antillian coup d'état in the Republic of Charlotta, relations between the two nations cooled down. Spetsnaz Augustus, leader of the Red Antilles, lamented: "Relations between the Duchy and the Red Antilles appeared to have a beautiful future. The forums of the Duchy were established with the help of the Red Antilles. But all these sincere gestures of sympathy towards the Duchy seem to be contra-productive. The Duchy is already part of the Mayoan lobby-machine without even having official relations with that nation."

These tensions had no positive effects on the then ongoing peace talks between Mayo and Charlotta.

In the fall of 2004, the Duke founded the Vrije Intermicronationale Comité (Non-denominational Intermicronational Comittee) with the goal of "bringing the Dutch micronations closer together". It had the opposite effect. To achieve his goal, the Duke found it necessary to organise a debate on the Charlottan history. Tensions rose even further when he opened Vrincom offices in Flanders, Victoria and Mayo (the non-communist nations), but not in Charlotta or the Red Antilles (the communist nations).

In a remarkable turn of events, Liberi would bring former arch-enemies Mayo and the Red Antilles closer together at the start of 2005. The intelligence services of the Red Antilles (CVS) and Mayo (ISIS) cooperated successfully to unroll a Liberi espionage plot.

Death

Liberi was abolished by its own Conseil Ducal on March 2, 2005.
