The Lakkvia sovereignty referendum took place on 30.X.1689 AN throughout the Craitish dependency of Lakkvia as a legally-binding decision regarding the cessation of the territory's status under Craitland and the establishment of an association with the Hurmu Trust Territory; a move expected to precede the restoration of a Hurmudan nation-state.

The referendum's final results were published on 4.XI.1689, with greater support toward enacting the proposal.

Background

The territory of Lakkvia was founded on the island of Lyrica by Craitland in 1606 AN, roughly two years after the dissolution of The Dominion constituent nation of Hurmu, with which Craitland shared a number of historical ties. Along with collaboration of the remaining native survivors from the Hurmu Genocide, migrants from nearby Stormark and nomadic Reindeer Herder tribes from Keltia, Craitish settlers established stability and safety in the region during the territory's early days, with Lakkvia soon becoming a thriving nation in its own right. Put in place by then-Prime Minister Älison Jorgeņ, the administration of the territory had always endeavoured to remain separate from that of the Craitish mainland and its ability to enact self-determination was enshrined in law.

While public opinion in Lakkvia remained positive towards Craitland for the majority of its first few years of existence, it began to sour somewhat upon the creation of the Union of States around the Sovereign Oceans, which saw Craitland enter into a multinational, militarily-backed alliance with Jingdao; the perpetrators of the Hurmu Genocide. Full Craitish affiliation with the USSO ultimately ended in 1658 AN—via a referendum for which Lakkvian votes were narrowly in support—with no detriment to the territory experienced. Subsequent years have, however, seen a rise in a newfound Hurmu identity among the nation's residents which has spurred a number of talks regarding the restoration of an independent Hurmu state. The collapse of Stormark in 1685 AN paved the way for the foundation of the Ghawlama-based Hurmu Trust Territory soon afterwards. With sentiment in the region for a restored Hurmu soon at an all-time high, Lakkvian head of government Jan Spiik triggered a successful vote in parliament to put the question of the territory's future sovereignty to its people.

Results

Turnout for the vote was high, with over 460,000 more Lakkvians casting a vote than had done in the territory for the 1658 referendum regarding Craitish USSO membership. Support for the proposal was overwhelming, with an average of well over two-in-three voting for "yes" upon the calculation of all valid votes. Fewer than one million votes were cast for "no", though such votes were not generally seen as explicitly indicating support for the sovereignty status quo, with many polled stating that while they supported the territory ending its ties to Craitland, they would prefer an independent Lakkvia over an immediate association with the Hurmu Trust Territory as had been officially proposed.
