Not to be conflated with the so-called twelve peoples of Elwynn

Elwynn has several ethnic groups. Some of them are native to Elwynn (such as the Elw and certain Elfinshi groups), while others have migrated to Elwynn throughout the last three centuries. Ethnic identity is not so important to Elwynnese people, as it is considered fluid. Most Elwynnese people have ancestors from several ethnic groups. Rather, if religious, one's religious identity takes precedence. Sometimes a larger Elwynnese nationhood identity or a political one is considered more important. Generally though, people's regional identity and culture is stronger than their ethnic one.

During the Vanic era, every person in Elwynn was categorized into one of so-called twelve peoples of Elwynn. This fueled tension. Since the Auspicious Occasion, categorization of ethnicity as well as ethnic identity are considered taboo in public discourse, though radicals still maintain that there is an informal hierarchy, with stereotypes and racism being abundant. Others deny that.
