Cognito is a canton of the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei. It is one of the largest cantons geographically and controls much of the southern shore of Lake Glacei. It has a strong diversified economy thanks to its wide geographic distribution.

Erstwhile known as Cogito (without the n).

History

Formerly the southern province of the former United Imperium. Larger, warmer and more densely populated than its sister province of Lac Glacei. Populated first by Mala'anje people exiled from their homes by Cyberian invaders around 6 ASC. Kahunamea IV was the first King to reign in Cognito after the exodus. Conflict arose shortly thereafter with the Lac Glaceians and continued until 372 when the two nations were unified under Jacobus I, exiled Emperor of the Cyberia. Cognito for several years came under the authority of Grand Duke Orion as part of the Grand Duchy of Lac Glacei. When the Grand Duke was assassinated all of Lac Glacei came under control of Shireroth, but they eventually relinquished their claims and the area reverted to barbarism. In 1690 the grand duchy was reestablished by the Grand Duke's long-lost heir, Orion II, and Cognito was vested as a canton once again.

Today, Cognito is a major agricultural producer for the grand duchy and with the decline in population from the days of the United Imperium much of the land has reverted back to farms. The early 1600s saw and agricultural renaissance of sorts as abandoned industrial areas were bioremediated through a national grant program and converted back to farm fields. Much of these sites have now become orchards and Congito has become known as a major apple grower and exporter to the rest of Apollonia. Other fruits produced include plums, apricots, pears and peaches. The success of these farms has led to canton-wide regulations limiting industrial development to cities like Cognito and Shroudbourg while rural areas are conserved for agriculture.
