The term Alriggian language does not refer to a single standardized language, as there is none in Alrig. Instead the nation knows many languages, such as Jingdaoese, Batavian, Flemish and South-Cibolan Saxon, and the Common Tongue which is the language customarily used by the Council of Driftwood. Due to the interaction between the various ethnicities in Alrig, some words and sayings have been developed that do not belong to any one of these original languages, but are unique to Alrig. This common way of speaking, which is being developed is considered to be the basis of a future true Alriggian language.

The name Alrig

The nation's name Alrig is an example of this. The original name for the nation was "The Old Oil Rig". The new morpheme 'al' is a mix of the South-Cibolan Saxon word "alt", meaning "old", and the Common Tongue word "oil" (from oil rig). It is not derived from the South-Cibolan Saxon word "Öl", as the South-Cibolan Saxons called the nation "Die alte Bohrinsel", not "Die Alte Ölbohrinsel".
