1709 Mondo Line

The Mondo Line of 1709 is a boundary declared by Mondo Etzeterra in XII.1709 AN, delimiting his self-proclaimed sphere of influence on the continent of Cibola.

Background

By 1707 AN, the continents of Benacia, Apollonia and Tapfer had been completely civilised, leaving the interiors of Keltia and Cibola, together with the south of Eura, as the last substantial remaining remnants of the Green outside of the arctic and antarctic circles. That these ungoverned territories continued to pose a substantial danger was graphically illustrated by the outbreak of the Second Ludwiggian-Monovian War later that year, with the destruction of the city of Sankt Elonzo a stark reminder of the vulnerability of isolated communities near the frontiers of civilisation. Popular reaction was particularly strong within neighbouring Etzeland, whose capital Neurossheim was the nearest major city to Sankt Elonzo, prompting calls for further expansion and the establishment of a defensive security zone to shield the populated areas from external attack.

Also of concern to the political elites of Etzeland and Steerswick was the prospect of renewed Natopian expansion on Cibola in the wake of the division of that empire. Many began to advocate an immediate expansion of the Mondosphere up to, and in some cases beyond, the Inner Sea watershed, a region that was increasingly felt to be the exclusive preserve of Mondo and his followers.

Despite the growing pressure, Mondo himself remained notably quiet on the subject. However, over the course of the following two years, a series of discrete back-channel negotiations took place between the Mondosphere and neighbouring states; although the nature of these discussions remains unclear, they are believed to have resulted in informal agreements to divide up the Cibolan Green.

Proclaimation of the Mondo Line

Matters eventually came to a head with the territorial dispute between the Principality of Whales and the newly-established Union of Oudorp in XII. 1709 AN. Faced with the prospect of a confrontation between neighbours, Mondo finally broke his silence to issue a brief statement:

Text
Hello and salutations! Mondo here.

Lately I've been troubled by the situation on Cibola. Unfriendly people in the Green have been causing trouble again and this has to stop. It's time for us to reach out and help all the nice people of these green spaces, who don't have access to important things. Like cake. Cake is important. Cake can also be green too if you add the right colouring to the marzipan.

We can't help these people though if we argue among ourselves, as our friends in Oudorp and Whales seem to be doing right now. This also has to stop.

So what should we do Mondo?

I think we need to make things nice and clear, so there is no more misunderstanding!

For some months, I've been talking to a number of friends about my plans. And now I'm ready to share them with you. I've made a map. A map with a big, friendly red line. The big friendly red line is the Mondo Line. Everything on my side of the Mondo Line is a Mondo Thing. Everything on the other side of the Mondo Line is not a Mondo Thing. This is nice and clear.

Friends are always welcome to cross the Mondo Line to see me. Please let me now when you are coming though as I may not have enough cake for unexpected friends.

I have to go now. Bye bye.

The Mondo Line of 1709 AN

Released alongside the statement was a map, depicting the so-called Mondo Line. Running from Zijincheng in the north to Steerwick's eastern border on the southern coast, the line demarcated Mondo's claimed sphere of influence on the continent.

Reaction

Reaction to the Mondo Line was muted, with the international community's attention distracted by the outbreak of hostilities between Whales and Lanzerwald. Taking advantage of the situation, the militaries of Etzeland and Steerswick swiftly mounted a joint operation in the south-east to secure the newly-claimed lands in the Highfields (Cibolan Saxon: Hochfelden) region, as far as the settlements of Bone/Bein and Deepbrook/Tiefenbach.
