The 1676 Northern unrest in Sanama is an ongoing conflict in northern and northeastern Sanama between the armed forces of Sanama and various paramilitary forces opposed to the Sanaman rule in the area. Most of the opposition forces are based across the border in Shireroth, where the power vacuum following the Kalirion Fracture has made the area into a hotbed for terrorists and militias. Several units from the Federal Army and Federal Air Force are engaged in the conflict.

Background

Although still nominally under Shirerithian rule, the areas known as Highpass and Shimmerspring have been heavily affected by several catastrophes. In 1559 AN, Highpass had a population of just over four million, with three-fourths speaking the local Passikaans language, related to Cisamarrese, Tellian and Istvanistani. At the end of the 16th century AN, the area came under rule of the lichs of Lichbrook. This rule was sustained for about 50 years, until the rule of the lichs collapsed between 1640 and 1648. This left the population in shatters as the population was reduced from over five million before the collapse to less than one million after. The area was also severely affected by the White Plague, further reducing its population. The area was thus a perfect playground for various warlords, criminals and terrorists following the Kalirion Fracture. The Fracture caused a vacuum in the power structure of the area. While the Fracture to the south eventually produced the relatively stable Sanaman state, in Highpass and Shimmerspring it only produced a failed state. Without any central power present, various terrorist organisations formed, among them the Istvanistani Patriotic Army. The IPA has as its goal to unite the Istvanistani-speaking areas in the region into an independent state.
