The Republic of Coria (/ˈkɔɹjə/) is a nation located on an island in southern Micras. The country has seen several transitions in government and is currently a republic, ruled by a benevolent military junta known as the Council for National Unity.

History

The Order

The Republic of Coria was founded by members of the Holy Order. The Order was founded around 500 years ago in the Empire of Jingdao and Southbatavia, as a continuation of the Order of the Cross and Temple of Cato. Originally a Catologican order, the Order has secularized over the centuries and its main purpose has been the preservance of a distinct culture and traditions, mainly originated in the Southbatavian mainland but also influenced by Batavian culture and Calbain tradition. The Order settled on Regnum following the destruction of Calbion by Sisera of Jingdao.

The continued order was founded by Jack Mounford (or Montfort), former King of Calbion and Grand Master of the order. Being severly wounded after the destruction of Calbion, de Montfort, together with 12 loyal members of the orders who previously had been active in the Calbain government, left the island on a wooden barge. On board, the 13 men re-established the order with as main purpose the perseverence of their way of life.

It took more than a year before the ship landed on a small island in southern Micras. The island was declared Regnum, which means as much as kingdom, of the Order. With the island being uninhabited, the danger of the Order dying out was substantial.

Luckily, several months later, a ship of refugees from Calbion, including women and children, arrived at the Regnum. A small settlement was established on the current site of the Citadel.

Shortly after, de Montfort died, bestowing the title of Grand Master on his cousin, Michail de Montfort. The Montfort family has kept the office since then.

The population of the Regnum has expanded to about 100.000 souls today. About 3000 of whom are members of the Order. The Order has had strong power on the island, ruling as a military council and a de facto stratocracy.

The 'New Era'

Under Grand Master Balian de Montfort, and especially under the last Grand Master, Jack de Montfort, the process of modernisation has started. This was named 'New Era'. The main changes during the new era were the nationalisation of the economy and the industrialisation of Coria. During the reign of the Montfort, a planned economy has been installed and hundreds of collective farming and industrial complexes have been established.

The modernisations also extended to the armed forces, the traditional role of the Order, including the customary swords and harnesses, was dramatically changed and the function of the Order became very close to that of a modern army. This lead to confusion and laid the foundation for the conflict between de Montfort and the more traditional members of the Order. Promissed for democracy were made during the implementation of the New Era, but thusfar no democratic institutions have been inplemented.

The Regnum

One of the most important changes in the wake of the New Era was the establishment of the office of King and the seperation between the Order and the secular government. The role of the Order as de facto government of Coria was deminished.

De Montfort, as Grand Master of the Order, was elected king and immediately after published a constitutional change announcing drastic changes in government, granting absolute power to the king and also appointing de Montfort as Chief Justice. The Order was degraded to safeguarding the tradition of the nation, a move considered paradoxally, since de Montfort himself was responsible for the largest cultural revolution in history. Furthermore, a large number of lower ranked soldiers were transferred from the Order to the personal guard of the king.

The speed with which the changes were implemented and the absolute power King de Montfort had bestowed upon himself lead to growing dissatisfaction among the members of the Order, especially in the Council of Twelve. It was rumoured that prominent members of the council had decided to revolt against de Montfort and to impeach him as king.

However, de Montfort, aided by sir Philippe Lecroux, decided to act first. This resulted in the event named 'the Storm of Swords' in which hundreds of members of the Order, including almost the entire Council of Twelve, were arrested and given harsh sentences including the dead penalty. It was then when the absolute power of de Montfort became visible to the public. These events led to the Order being practically motionless and it wasn't long before de Montfort officially dissolved the Order, creating a new standing army in the form of his personal guard. Shortly after, Martial law was declared in the entire nation.

Economy

The economy of Coria under the Regnum followed a statist model and was entirely planned. All major industry and companies were nationalised during the rule of king Jack de Montfort and collective farms and factories constitute more than 90% of the economy. After the January 10 revolution, the Council for National Unity adopted a neoliberal and laizés-faire economic policy. This ensured tremendeous economic growth in the Republic.

Calbain period

After years of inactivity, the island became part of Calbion, with which it has strong historical ties. The island became part of the Morwlad province as Ynys Corrach.
