The Alrig national football team is the football team which currently represents the nation of Alrig, which since the peaceful Partition of Alrig has been divided into Aemilian Alrig and the region of Alrig in Greater Kildare. Previously the team represented the Shirerithian protectorate of Alrig, and before that it represented the Kildarian protectorate, Great Apollonian and Jingdaoese autonomous regions, and independent nation of the same name. It is a member of the AEFA, and is run by the ERAS. The team is the official successor of the Old Oil Rig, and as such retains its records.
Since the peaceful Partition of Alrig in April 2024, part of the former republic is under control by Shireroth, while another part has been under control by Aemilia. After careful negotiations with both federal governments, the national football organisation decided that it would relocate its headquarters to Sint Anna and would become an Aemilian organisation. It promised to keep traditions from the long history together with Kildare and Jingdao, such as singing hymns to the Heavenly Light before each match.
History
The team was founded in mid-2018 after the foundation of Alrig as the successor state to the Old Oil Rig. The team first competed in the 2019 World Cup qualifiers, where they finished bottom of their five-team group with one point to their name.
In the following year's Copa Apollonia qualifiers, the team improved and finished third in their six-team group with 15 points. Alrig was annexed by Jingdao later in the year.
In the 2021 FMF World Cup qualification rounds, the team finished third in their five-team group with eleven points. Later in the year, Alrig became an autonomous region of Great Apollonia, after Jingdao joined with Çakaristan, and retained its separate FMF membership.
In early 2022, prior to the start of the year's Copa Apollonia qualifiers, Alrig became a protectorate of the newly-independent Kildare. In the qualifiers themselves, the team finished second in their five-team group with 15 points. Shortly afterwards, Alrig became a protectorate of Shireroth following its annexation of Kildare.
The 2023 FMF World Cup qualification rounds saw the team finish second in their six-team group with 17 points.
The team competed in the Copa Apollonia qualifiers the following year, where they placed third in their five-team group with eleven points.
