Federal Parks Service
The Federal Parks Service (FPS) is an independent statutory agency that manages the national parks, national monuments, and other natural, historical, and recreational properties with same-wise designations in Nouvelle Alexandrie. This includes the Federal System of Parks and Monuments, the government's list of national parks and monuments. Responsibility for the operations of the FPS is within the portfolio of the Department of Interior.
Federal System of Parks and Monuments
The Federal System includes all properties managed by the Federal Parks Service, and have a variety of titles and designations. The system encompasses approximately 154 thousand km2 (38 million acres), of which about 12 thousand km2 (2.9 million acres) are in private possession. The largest unit is the Fauqier National Wildlife Park, in North Lyrica. At 22 thousand km2 (54 million acres), it covers 14% of the entire system. The smallest unit is the Bemar National Memorial in Cárdenas, which is less than 120 m2 (0.03 acres).
Most of the national parks and monuments are authorized by the Department of Interior, but are subject to authorizing legislation from the Cortes Federales. The President of the Government, however, has powers to proclaim new parks and monuments by executive order. Regional governments also have powers to raise regional parks to federal status.
Designations
- National parks include all preserved nature reserves, wildlands and scenic areas.
- National monuments encompass single unique cultural or natural features. Some monuments are managed or co-managed by the Federal Wildlife Bureau or the Office of Land Management.
- National historic sites include all significant cultural resources that are not of a complicated nature.
- National memorials include areas that memorize people or events, and may or not be placed at a historic location.
- National shores are protected parts of the national coast line and lakes.
- National trails are a system of long distance routes that are preserved for scenic or historic reasons.
