Byers was drafted first overall in the Florian Hockey League's Expansion draft by the newly created franchise, Dragonmoor Storm. Whilst Dragonmoor Storm was still waiting to play their first matches, Byers continued to play in the Florian Major Junior Leagues to continue his development before his team eventually started play and Byers signed a three-year entry-level contract in July 2019. Mike was given captain duties for the Storm's inaugural Florian Hockey League against Etourney Avalanche, in this match, he scored a hattrick and assist and became the first FHL debutant to do so. Throughout the season, Byers was creating exceptional records in terms of scoring and assists and led the team to the Farrar Cup playoffs in its inaugural season. The Dragonmoor Storm would go better than anyone expected and finished as losing playoff semi-finalists and in the process become one of the first Florian hockey teams to qualify for the Micras Champions' Hockey League.
