Recavanac
Scientific Name: Glacea infernus |
Physical Description Body Type: Worm-like Biological Information Diet: Carnivorous |
The Recavanac is a very large, carnivorous, worm-like creature that lives within the antarctic ice pack. Also known as the "White Worm", the creature lives off of the land-bound creatures that traverse the ice pack for migrational or hunting purposes; while it can swim, the Recavanac prefers to burrow through the ice. The creature features in legends of southern lands, especially those of Caradia, because of its propensity for violence. The creature senses vibrations in the ice, and then burrows toward the source of the sound using its horn, which is heated to a very high temperature through biological methods to enable it to tunnel through solid ice. The recanavac is usually between thirty and thirty-five metres in length, though they have been known to grow up to sixty metres. Recavanac attacks are rare, though they have been known to attack even naval ships on occasion.
Hunts
A long-standing tradition in Caradia that has recently migrated to the Ciric Confederacy is the practic of recavanac hunts. These are often associated with hazing, and are typically undertaken by youths between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four. Recavanac hunts are also undertaken by rural communities, especially Caradian ones, who hold onto old beliefs regarding the recavanac as an evil spirit.
Recavanac hunters usually travel in groups of four, and tend to be armed with the best weapons available to private citizens due to the size, danger, and resilience of their quarry. Recavanac hunter in Caradia typically ride snowmobiles manufactured by the Caradian Coal Company, and use small explosive devices to create vibrations in the ice to draw out the recavanac. In the few confederate hunts that are practiced, individuals are usually equipped with Foxhounds and a device, colloquially referred to as a hammer stick, that is placed into the ice and generates low-frequency sonic waves to attract the recavanac. Most teams that go out do not encounter a recavanac, due to their rarity, but many of those that do do not return.
