The Head of State of the Apollonian Republic of Shireroth's East - and before that Kildare - is the Caudillo, a title granted by the Seven Heroic Legions of the National Protection Army to Trajan Myksos. Just like in the old days of the Dutchy of Kildare, the head of state is still the supreme leader of the Apollonian Republic.
History
During the days that Kildare was still a subdivision of Shireroth, it was ruled by the Dutch (or Duke) of Kildare. Since 5141 ASC this position became hereditary and a variety of titles came into existence: Ruler of the Eastern Empire or Dominator (by Flavius I). The House of Myksos ruled the Eastern Empire for approximately 400 years, after which Trajan Myksos (from the same dynasty) dissolved the monarchy and was placed in charge of the Republic.
As there were no succession laws, it was highly likely that the title would be passed based on tradition, which was granting it to the oldest child of the ruler (a habit which is in use since the establishment of the Myksos Dynasty in 5141 ASC). Around 5598 ASC, Trajan made it clear that if a family member would succeed him, he had to have certain qualities. It seemed that he was found of the idea of keeping the title in his family, but not necessarily in the bloodline (once he told to his clerks: "Better to adopt a capable officer than placing a fool of a son on the Throne").
The first ruler of Kildare - after it was united in 513 ASC by Kaiser Gaelen I - was Patrick Foley, who ruled from a palace in Apollo City. Later, with the loss of Audentior, the Dukes would rule from their residence in Blackrock Nua. It was not until Dutchess Ignatia I that the Dutchal Court moved back to the City (however, this would only become official during her successors reign).
Era name
In the period after the Apollonian independence (around 5598 ASC), the Caudillo sought a way to consolidate his power - and that of his successors without effectively restoring a monarchy. For this he adopted the use of era names: a name granted to the highest leader of the Republic which showed that they were direct successors of the first Dutches. In no way it made the ruler into royalty. However, as the new measure looked like a step in the direction of the restoration of the monarchy, it received support from the loyalists who had fought Trajan and his Legions.
The introduction was met with some confusion among the population and made it unclear if the Apollonian Republic would stay a (military) republic or transform into an autocracy. Caudillo Trajan made an end to any doubts: the title of Caudillo would not automatically be hereditary, even if the era name referred to its royal ancestors. It seemed that the Caudillo saw more advantages in adopting capable members into his family and appoint them into certain positions (like that of his successor.
The era name is used in formal documents, mostly for when the ruler has already died. For the era name itself, it refered to the title of Dutch, by adding Dux to it. For example: Patrick Foley was called the Shang Dux (First Dutch). The name itself - mostly written in Jingdaoese (which automatically makes the usage of it less popular) - refers to a wish, or a typical characteristic of the leader (for example: the Mi Dux, Bill Dusch, mean: Enthusiast Dutch).
List of Heads of State
Old Era
A lot of information about the Dutches was lost during the Old Era (period of the Lost Age and Dark Ages). It's still unknown how many Dutches there actually were or when ruled who. Dates and information gathered here are guesses done by the historians within Kildare, but shouldn't be considered canon.
