The National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF) is a federal program from the government of Nouvelle Alexandrie, that provides funding to build, presrve, and rehabilitate affordable rental housing for low-income households. It is administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The NHTF is funded through contributions from Mortgage companies, which are required to set apart 2% of their annual profits for the NHTF. The fund is used for a wide variety of activities related to the development and preservation of affordable rental housing, including:

  • The Low-Income Housing Expansion Program, which builds new rental housing units that are affordable to extremely and very low-income households;
  • The Rental Rehabilitation Program, which rehabilitates and preserves housing units for extremely and very low-income households;
  • The Federal Rental Assistance Program, which provides both tenant-based and project-based rental assistance to the extremely and very low-income households.

The NHTF works in collaboration with other existing federal affordable housing programs, but is targeted at households in extreme poverty: those at or below 30% of the area median income.
