The Region of the Isles is one of the constituent countries of the Commonwealth of Hamland. This region is made up of three distinct cultural entities which were merged into one state at the creation of the Commonwealth. These regions were previously; Taeland, Iridian Islands, Liberty Islands and Port Tablot. The Islands are located to the South East of the Hammish mainland and are known for their fishing and gold production.
History
The recent history of the region is short lived as the constituent Islands each have their distinct history preceding their merging. Before Hamland had full control over the region the islands had a number of different rulers. Taeland, for example, was known as Churchill. The Islands of Godfriedplatz had for some time been owned by Iridia, and for a short time Ocia. Port Tablot is the longest established Hammish territory in the region.
Taeland
Taeland is one of the oldest territories of Hamland which came under control of the crown in 2007. In the real world Taeland was founded by President Nathan as a Communist dictatorship but was short lived. Following this Taeland became one of Hamland's first nations on Micras. Before the Island was claimed it was a colony of Nova England called Churchill. Following Hamland's annexation of the Island a distinct history has been given to Taeland with the Liberty Islands retaining a little of the colonial history.
Taeland has had a long period of instability with frequent communist uprisings in the area. In more recent years tensions have calmed with increased autonomy for the government of the Islands. Taeland interestingly competes as its own country in football competitions even though it has never been a sovereign territory.
Liberty Islands
The Liberty Islands are the most recent additions to the Commonwealth having come under control following the collapse of Nova England. For many years they were known as the Virgin Islands and presented a large inconvenience for the Hammish Government. Numerous invasion plans were constructed over the years as tensions heated and cooled before, eventually, it became part of Hamland.
Following its entrance to the Kingdom the islands were renamed "Liberty Islands" in Hammish - Saorsa Eileean to represent their status as a fully integrated part of Hamland.
The majority of the people living on the islands are of Hammish descent and so it, alongside Port Tablot, is one of the only ethnically Hammish regions of the Region of the Islands.
Port Tablot
Port Tablot is the oldest Hammish Territory of the Region of the Isles and dates back to the United Commonwealth between Hamland, Monovia and Iridia. Port Tablot was founded as a military base which included the island where the city is located as well as a small peninsula on the island adjacent.
Following the collapse of the United Commonwealth the lands of Iridia were returned and shortly after came under the control of Ocia. Hamland and Ocia during this time were big rivals on Keltia with each country wishing to be the larger power in the region. This 'cold war' led to various exchanges making Port Tablot a significant base for the Hammish Government and a potential flash-point. The narrow peninsula which remains under the local authority of Port Tablot once contained one of Hamland's testing sites for ICBMs along with Taeland.
Another historical crisis was the flare-up of relations between Hamland and Babkha. During this time Hamland was aligned to left wing countries, although this did not include Ocia. The aggressive stance of a group of countries led to the government expelling citizens of Babkha. This led to Babkha sending a boat to the territorial waters of Hamland. This did not lead to any engagement and went no further.
In recent years Port Tablot has developed into differing industries. Its territorial placement continues to make it an important Hammish site.
Godfriedplatz Islands
The Godfriedplatz Islands are the only current remnants of Iridia. These regions were briefly under the control of Ocia before Hamland took control of the entire region.
Godfriedplatz is the economic capital of the region and has been an important part of the Hammish economy due to gold reserves found on the resources map. These reserves helped pave the way for the development of a financial industry which is part of the Ham 50.
The local language of Esperanto is what gives the region its official language, although Hammish is spoken widely in the regions of the Liberty Islands and Port Tablot.
