Higher education in Meckelnburgh is the fifth and final tier in the educational pyramid of the United Kingdom of Meckelnburgh, following secondary education. At the completion of high school, Meckelnish students leave compulsory education after the 11th year (around ages 16–17). Meckelnburgh's higher education system comprises a network of universities, colleges, and specialized institutions dedicated to diverse academic disciplines. Higher education in Meckelnburgh is managed at the kingdom-level for each of the constituent states as one of the standardized social services.

History

The formal systems of higher education in Meckelnburgh can be traced back to 1685 AN when the first university was established in the wake of the Kingdom's foundation.

List of institutions

Institutions of higher education in Meckelnburgh fall into five categories:

• Universities: offer degrees in the humanities and theoretical sciences, as well as graduate degrees. University-level institutions that offer degrees only in the humanities are known as liberal arts colleges.
• Colleges of applied science: offer degrees in professional qualifications and the arts. Other names may be used (e.g. "conservatory" for a music college)
• Polytechnic Institutes: offer degrees in engineering and other practical sciences (e.g. agriculture)
• Academies: schools for the military services of Meckelnburgh and other uniformed professions (e.g. police)
• Junior colleges: offer associates degrees, continuing education credit classes and the Testamur of Higher Education.

Tuition and fees

In the kingdom's socialized welfare system, higher education in Meckelnburgh is available for a small tuition fee, Ʀ7.00 per credit, plus extraneous costs, at a community college. A semester at a Meckelnburgh college therefore runs approximately Ʀ150, while a university degree is around Ʀ300. Specialized professional education, such as law or medicine, is charged Ʀ500-600 per semester. Foreign students without permanent status or freedom of movement, by visa or online, pay a rate 8.5 times greater.

Qualifications

Testamur of Higher Education

The Testamur of Higher Education (THE) is a qualification that certifies an individual as completing the first two years of a university education, generally four to five years. Meckelnburgh law requires that all graduates of the undergraduate program (a bachelor's degree) must pass a general education curriculum in a variety of subject areas. Effectively, the first two years of a bachelor's program is dedicated to this broad exposure. The Testamur is the equivalent of 60 semester credit hours, while a bachelor's degree is 90 to 150 credits.

A student who graduates from high school may receive either a standard or "honors" Secondary School Graduation Diploma (SSGD). An honors diploma requires completion of a 12th year (ages 17–18) of public education, and passing the equivalent of 15 credits of university education. Students holding the HSSGD may matriculate directly to a university or polytechnic institute. Other students must complete the Testamur at a junior college before applying. A student may also transfer to a university or institute after earning the Testamur while attending a college of applied sciences.
