Sustained street demonstrations started in the town of Apurimaq and the city of Rimarima over a steep rise in the prices of food and fuel, worsened by stagnant wages and widespread unemployment. These demonstrations grew quickly and kicked off a series of confrontations with law enforcement. On the night of 14 X 1662, 80 demonstrators were killed in clashes with law enforcement.
