Apollonia is a continent on the planet Micras. it is the second largest continent on the planet, behind Keltia
Origin and Etymology
Apollonia is the home of the Micronational Cartography Society and the first continent to be mapped - the precursor to the Society, the Mapping Ministry of the UAS, began by mapping the southwestern part of the continent around Lake Christoph. The first MCS maps had only the west of the continent. Later cartographers mapped the center, and the east as far as Tallandor Bay was only mapped with the expansion into the Eastern Hemisphere.
Apollonia was named after the Apollo Sector, most of whose nations were retroactively placed here in the histories; the Sector itself was named for the Apolyton Civilization Site, which was itself named for the Greek work meaning "ultimate". Other names for the continent are the Apollonian name "Audentior", after one of its earliest countries, and the Babkhan name "Prinitica", after a country of Troy Thompson's that occupied its middle third.
Geography
The largest continent besides Keltia, Apollonia has a varied geography. The central spine are the mighty Trans-Apollonian Mountains, famous for their three high peaks of Mt. Kosygen, Mt. Stone, and Mt. Ni. To their south is the basin of the Antya, the cradle of Micran civilization, and to its north is the basin of the Camoleo; both rivers are wide and fertile. The whole area is dotted with lakes, including Lake Christoph, Micras' largest, and Lake Lamantia, Micras' highest. North of the mountains is the frigid Tallandor Bay area and the Gralan heartland; east is the rolling plains of the Glacei area and the crystal clear waters of Lake Glacei. Southeast Apollonia is dry and sandy, except for the Mediterranean climate along the coast of the Raynor Ocean that gave the area the ancient name of Terre d'Riches.
History
Apollonian civilization began with Audentior in 2000, and has continued ever since. The northwest around the Halberd Strait has long been occupied by fantasy nations like Treesia, New Bruges, and Tallandor, but has since given way to more normal fare like the European-ish Holzer Empire and Landingberg. The west was Shirerithian for a long while until they were forced to give up their colonies in Lac Glacei and Mondesia and limit themselves to their holdings in Kildare around the Antya River. Nowadays, Gralus dominates the north, Shireroth the west, and Antica the east, while the inhospitable south and center remain unclaimed. But no history of Apollonia could be complete without mentioning two of its largest empires, often compared to Russia in the sheer amount of low-quality land they held: Prinitica, active in 2003, and Lovely, active from 2006 or so onward.
