The league is contested by eight teams, with each team playing 14 fixtures per year. The top two teams that finish top of the table promote to the [[Zyrkis Super League]].
The league will host its first season starting from 2022 onwards as a new format of the league was introduced. The league plans to have 8 clubs in its first season and plans to expand further later on, consisting of three rounds in which each team plays every other team once. Seasons run from late August to late April, with teams playing 21 matches each, totalling 147 matches in the season.

Zyrkis League 1 was established in 2007 alongside the Zyrkis Super League after the government decided to have a more competitive league structure.
Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored.
