Culture

Cuisine is rice-based. Several kinds of meat, primarily chicken and fish, but also pork and to a lesser extent beef. Not spicy but savory, sometimes soup-like. Prepared by grilling, boiling, frying or steaming. Spices include turmeric, ginger, cumin, mild chilies. Dishes include Seting. Meals are usually communal within a household or extended household, with large pots of food that people can take from. Rice, soup, stewed vegetables, various meats like grilled chicken, grilled fish, pork sausages, pork soup, etc.

Rice is the most important source of income for rural people, together with chicken and pork production and certain fruits. Only between 10-15% of the rice production is exported. Rice is mainly grown on smaller farms, often smaller than one hectare. Rice cultivation plays a part in Sanaman religion and customs. Sometimes in rural areas wages, debts and rent is payed in rice. Rice is the main staple food for Sanamans, Thanatossians and Cisamarrese, while Passikaaners eat potatoes. Rice is synonymous with food for Sanamans. Rice has been cultivated in Sanilla and Amarra for at least 1,700 years. The most common variant is Yasmin rice.

Sanamans are generally family oriented, often living two or three generations together. Couples usually marry between 25-30 years old and have several children. Religion plays a big role as a cultural framework, setting the calendar providing families with opportunities for larger socialisation with friends and extended family. Dry season rice crop from I to mid-VI, wet season crop from mid-VII to end of XIII. Wet season from mid VII to mid-XII, dry season from XIV to VI. Typhoons possible between X and mid-XII.
