The President of Nova Caradia, or "Președinte" in Sarnechi, is the head of state of Nova Caradia and wields executive power which is shared with the Prime Minister, and also bears some legislative power shared with the Casa Legii. The President has the responsibility of nominating a Prime Minister from among the representatives of the Ședință, and of representing the republic as head of state. The office was created with the 1689 Constitution of Nova Caradia, with its first holder being Pândi Procescu, who had also headed the Constitutional Council that drafted the constitution.

The President is elected by simple popular vote amongst the adult (18+) population of Nova Caradia to a four year term, with a maximum of three terms. The President as styled as "His/Her Excellency".

Powers

The President is defined in the constitution as being the head of executive power in the republic, and has a number of powers enshrined in the constitution as well as some that are outlined but not strictly defined in the constitution. In any case, the President is liable to the Casa Legii, and must enjoy its confidence to remain in power.

Powers of Appointment

The President of the Republic has the power to nominate a Prime Minister from among the Ședință, though this appointment must be confirmed by a vote from the Ședință. In addition, the President has uncontested power to appoint to the following positions:

  • Stăpâni of districts
  • Ambassadors to foreign nations
  • Chief of General Staff to the armed forces
  • Heads of Parliamentary Commissions

Other Powers

In addition to the powers of appointment, the President of the republic has the power to issue presidential orders, which are defined as temporary laws or initiatives that have the force of law unless repealed by the Casa Legii. These can include temporary restrictions such as quarantines or travel bans, or can be resolutions to accomplish a goal by a set time, such as setting a production goal for a certain industry or an importation goal within a set amount of time.

The President has the right to veto incoming bills from the Casa Legii that have passed both the Ședință and the Senat. This veto can be overturned by a four-fifths majority vote from the Ședință.

As the highest representative of the republic, the President has the sole power to sign or revoke treaties from foreign powers. The President does not have the power to write such a treaty, as that power is delegated to the Senat.
