Oh, it's possbile to achieve the same gravitation as earth with a hollow cylindre. You would need to raise the density of parts of the interior shell...if you would have a thousand km thick Osmium layer in it (density is about 22000kg/m^3, as opposed to earth's average 5500), you could compensate for quite a bit hollowness....

Even still, that's not really natural, however.

What is natural though? If that is how the planet hasbeen produced, that is how nature is on Micras.

A planet is created, not produced (...ignore HHGTG for now ), and so being a rocky planet it would have the elements common to a rocky planet. Iron, nickel, etc. Having rarer elements just is odd for a planet unless it was artifically created, and I doubt that people would want our home planet to be artifical.

Plus a hollow planet would mean no magnetosphere, and thus no compasses for Micras, as there is no geodynamo in a hollow planet.

Also, a cylinder would be quite odd for a planet. Ignoring the fact that it is very unlikely for a planet to be formed naturally in the shape of a cylinder, the gravity would be different, as the gravitational force would go like 1/r instead of 1/r^2.

Furthermore, the direction of gravity would vary across the surface. On Earth, the force of gravity varies minutely from place to place but is always (to all intents and purposes) vectored to the centre of the globe. On a cylindrical planet, the gravity vector would still be to the centre of mass regardless of whether the cylinder is hollow or filled. Anywhere away from the equator, an object would fall at an angle - not that we would notice, because it would appear that the ground was angled.
That indeed is quite true. Also, since the complete surface of the planet is exposed to the sun at the same angle, one wouldn't have any climatological changes. (Probably when we analyze the Micras climate in detail, I'm quite sure we will discover quite a few impossibilities anyway)

However, if an element is rare on earth, it is not necessarily rare elsewhere. I have to admit that I'm not 100 % sure what exactly determines the abundance of an element in a planet (it probably has something to do with radioactive decay chains, but also quite a bit of chance is involved), but if the planet has to be evolved naturally in it's entirety, no fantasy elements whatsoever can exist. Creatures who live as long as elves? Not very likely. Magic? Forget about it.

(Please note, I don't think it's a good idea for Micras to be cylindrical and/or hollow)

You have a point there. But what I mean is that I feel for geographic standard that Micras would be best to be a standard rocky terran planet. Personally I think that the actual stuff that could be scientific would stay scientific. So that despite elves and magic and other cultural elements, we could do scientific stuff as well, such as the physical elements of the planet as well as other planets in our system, instead of doing something like a discworld or something.

So the point is that it would be "remotely" believable when it comes that we can work on semi-scientifically. (I'm not going to say pseudoscientific because we're doing this for a hobby and not saying that it's actual science or it is remotely true)

Since there are people interested in this - would you like to actually work on this? Perhaps we could make it a semi-offical organization like this in some way.
