Global Warming: Scaling Back the Ice

Post by Ryan »

It has been mentioned several dozen times that the ice extends too far inward from the poles, resulting in bad globularisation (is that a word?) of the map and other inconsistencies. This being especially so for the Arctic/Antarctic nations, such as Ibelin. Hyperborea is an exception where the ice would extend southward around the island and have to be incorporated into the climatological maps if/when they're created.

So, anyways, how many people would be in favour of scaling back the ice a tad to more reasonable degrees?

I'd be for it.

The question is, would it expose new land mass to do so??

No, it'd simply give ice-bound lands like Sypyr and Leng ice-free shores. Leng would probably still be ice-bound. But Sypyr would be exposed, at least partially, and the ice would be further from other lands. It would'nt change the physical shape of the landmasses at all. Basically it very well could be written off as global warming.

Technically, it would be removing water, as otherwise we'd have decreased landmass, and I know we don't want that. :P

As well, isn't it said in Hyperborean lore that there is only one non-icebound city there?

Yes, Port Tyrsgaard on Volsung is technically the only non-icebound city in all of Hyperborea.

Sounds like a good idea. Remember that permanent pack ice tends to aggregate near land, so those few islands which extend all the way to the poles (that is, the last few pixels at the top and bottom of the maps) would still attract ice.

The best way to plan this would be to redraw the arctic and antarctic zones as polar-coordinate maps; then you could experiment with different radii for your permanent ice and pack it up to the islands. Then, map that back onto your main map.
Cheers
