Re: 2010 FMF World Cup Official Thread
Natopia 0-0 Novatainia
A game that many thought had potential to be a classic group-decider ended in huge disappointment as neither team could find the back of the net and the group standings didn't change.
Neither team made any impact on the game, with the only chance of note coming at the beginning of the second half. Chris Alberto was brought down outside the area on the right wing by Joshua Murphy-Lee, who saw yellow as the referee deemed his foot to be high. Lars Mkvenner looped the free-kick into the middle of the box and Mart Hil'jandé, who had come up from defence, headed the ball toward the top corner of the goal, but Leonardo was there on the post to clear it well away with his own head.
Regardless of needing a win to secure progression into the knock-out stages, Novatainia were sluggish and failed to break down Natopia's tight-knit defence. Perhaps their previous efforts against Nova England and Craitland had worn them out or maybe with a younger squad, the experience wasn't there. Whatever it was, it meant that Natopia were able to sit back and absorb any building attacks, and hold-on to seal a place in the quarter-finals for the first time ever, beating last year's runners-up Nova England to that privilege by a point.

Valencia v Beaugium Preview
Valencia and Beaugium take out onto Oin's Street today with the view of progression looking slimmer rather than hopeful. Valencia could still go through with a win whlst Beaugium will be dependent on a high heavy scoring one sided result in the other group encounter across the other side of the river in Hamlet O'Grappa at Fisherman Road.
In team news, Valencia make 2 changes. Juninho Santos returns to the team as a starter after being dropped against Monovia, with Gilberto Ferreira dropping to the bench. Francesc Hernández retains his position in the lineup whilst the return of Romero's Diego Camachón following a head injury earlier in the Tellian Serie A season results in Luís Blanco being dropped to the bench as Camachón returns to partner captain Jesús Moreira.
The threat will more than likely come from Juninho Santos and Francesc Hernández, whilst Manny Cabrera could also be brought into play if the right passes are delivered for him to finish. AC Scoglitto's Daniel Palazio will also prove to be an important player as the Tellian based keeper looks to continue to frustrate to his opponents with his reflexes as he looks to be a key asset in the Valencian team.
Beaugium, who are sitting rock bottom will continue to try out the 4-3-3 formation although the slight switch with Phil Phillipson going in the middle instead of captain Steve Stevenson who now plays wide left in the front three may to prove to be a key factor as they plan to pass long and use the target man tactic effectively. Meanwhile the Beaugians look to make 1 change with Alan Alanson coming back into the squad in place of Benjamin Benson.
It is a huge ask for Beaugium, but I do expect them to win this one. However Valencia could spring a surprise here and take advantage of the Beaugians poor form this world cup and should they do, they are more than likely to go through.
Predicted Lineups
Valencia (4-5-1): 1 D Palazio (GK), 2 G Reveillière, 4 J Moreira (capt), 14 D Camachón, 3 L Alves, 7 S Javier, 21 J Ricardo, 19 F Hernández, 8 J Santos, 11 X Levas, 10 M Cabrera.

Monovia v Holzborg Preview
With both teams coming off highs from their previous game after victories, Monovia look to go into the clash at Fisherman Road in pole position to take the top spot as they face on the ever improving Holzer team.
Having lost the first game to Valencia 2-1, Holzborg bounced back with a shock emphatic win against Beaugium, with Kristian Jentzsch continuing his fine form, having already netted 4 goals in the tournament. By far the Holzer team will be dependent on Jentzsch to continue in his fine form as they look to play the same team that they played in their previous outings. We should expect that the likes of Wilhelm Schneider and Marko Breumer will be galloping down from their respective fullback positions with the packed back line full of experience and will look to remain solid.
Monovia so far have retained a 100% record in the tournament so far, with a 2-1 comeback victory over Beaugium followed by a narrow win over the Valencians. Likewise with the Holzer team, the Monovians will play the same squad they have played in both of their previous matches, with the main threat coming up front by Armand Diarra. Diarra, who currently plays for Osjaton Aztecs in Craitland has shown throughout the tournament so far that he is one of the quickest strikers in the competition who will leave defenders for dead should he be given the opportunity to run into space. Meanwhile, the Monovians are still expecting Lucas Zaya to come good following his fine season for his club in Craitland; however this has yet happened.
With both teams having come off brilliant victories, it's hard to tell which team will unfold. Holzborg will need a win to ensure that they'll safely go through whilst Monovia only need a draw.
Predicted Lineups
Monovia (4-4-1-1): 18 G Maurel (GK), 22 Z Emans, 6 D Große, 14 P Nikolic, 3 L Ducourtioux, 11 J B Alain, 13 R Zabavnik, 4 M Wojchiechowski (capt), 7 A Lalic, 21 L Zaya, 9 A Diarra.
Holzborg (5-3-2): 1 J Pottinger (GK), 2 W Schneider, 5 A Roman, 20 A von Schlidt, 4 Pedro Silva, 3 M Breumer (capt), 7 M Burkhardt, 14 O Keffman, 6 A Hertl, 10 J Littbarski, 11 K Jentzsch.

Monovia 3-1 Holzborg
Monovia coast their way through into the last 8 by beating Holzborg into the knockout stages, preventing the Holzers from a dream début world cup. The Holzborg team got off to a good start, with Jürgen Littbarski proving to be a threat after striking from 20 yards to the sidepost after his shot was deflected by a brave Louis Ducourtioux who threw his body in front of the ball.
However the early Holzer attack didn't stop there as wing backs Wilhelm Schneider and Marko Breumer kept attacking forward and creating crosses for the strikers, with none of them able to convert any opportunity in the opening 10 minutes. Monovia made their break shortly afterwards after a long ball from Dominic Zrinko undid the offside trap of Holzborg as Armand Diarra ran behind and roofed the ball into the top of the net.
Monovia doubled their lead through Diarra again after a Holzborg corner was caught by Grégory Maurel, who kicked the ball up top for Diarra and with little or no opposition to chase him down, the Osjaton striker was left one-on-one with goalkeeper Pottinger. Diarra cleverly dummied his shot and rounded the goalkeeper before tapping the ball in to make it 2-0. By this time Monovia were well in front.
Holzborg came back after the break after a cross from the left by Marko Breumer was met by Kristian Jentzsch, who lept over the defence to nod it into the corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Maurel rooted to his position. Jentzsch on form and on fire, with the current records set in this world cup, many would have predicted that Holzborg may come back to make it 2-2.
But Monovia killed the game off 25 minutes from time as Lucas Zaya finally found his form by picking up a loose ball from the centre of the pitch following a miss-pass in the Monovian Midfield. After exchanging a give and go with Diarra, Zaya unleashed a looping shot from 30 yard out. With the unexpected height, the goalkeeper John Pottinger decided to try and catch the ball, before spilling it into the back of his own net in a highly embarrassing mistake. The match ended 3-1, with Holzborg suffering a bitter defeat that puts them out.
Monovia however remain their 100% record and proceed, being the only team in this World Cup to actually win all three of their group games.

Toketi v Stormark Preview
Haembeer Garden will see Group A winners Toketi take on Group B runners up Stormark as both teams try to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. While Toketi have had experience in the semi-finals and the final in 2007, Stormark are taking a trip into the unknown having progressed through the groups. Even crashing out in this round of the world cup would be a record performance for the nation as it is still the furthest they've got in any world cup tournament they have entered. However with the tricky task of dispossessing an improving Toketi, they firmly remain with the underdog status in the clash.
Toketi set to make one change in their line-up, with Erin Jowasaki being replaced by Alberto Trask after returning from suspension. Jowasaki, of Dekiru Demons has been fairly below par in the world cup so far, after starting 3 matches with no goals, whilst fellow striker Tom Kenstein has been bagging the goals to keep Toketi in the tournament. Once again, Turk ronAjain will captain the side with no other major changes to the squad.
Stormark on the other hand make a formation change as well as several changes. Sven Yngvesson comes into the squad to play alongside Aki Mäenpää, with Fjalar Heidarsson dropping to the bench. It seems that the shape will be slightly changed to a 4-2-2-2 formation, with the two attacking midfielders providing the width along with the fullbacks. Captain Tim Rainer and Tuomas Hjular will form the defensive midfield line, whilst Tommy Gamst-Pedersen and Ewald Wolfram will form the attacking midfield, with Sven Luudge dropping to the bench as Wolfram moves up into the starting 11. There has also been a change in the back with defender Martin Jör switching to centre back as Jyrki Paatelainen switches to left back.
Both teams have fairly strong squads, although the odds are firmly stacked against the Stormarkian team. Toketi have the advantage in experience and have been at this level more than once before, so it is clear to expect that this will happen.
Predicted Line-ups
Toketi (4-4-2): 1 T ronAjain (GK) (capt), 2 P Neusin, 6 R Miesin, 5 N Jufirya, 3 T Ranjana, 17 J Zyxveldtsen, 4 Y Firanjan, 8 N Furben, 7 I Trask, 9 A Trask, 10 T Kenstein.
Stormark (4-2-2-2): 13 R Mulkensson (GK), 22 A Illola, 23 R Himanen, 6 M Jör, 16 J Paatelainen, 4 T Rainer (capt), 15 T Hjular, 8 E Wolfram, 20 T Gamst-Pedersen, 19 S Yngvesson, 18 A Mäenpää.

Batavia v Hamland Preview
Hamland's quest of trying to follow suit with Alexandria in winning the world cup on home soil continues as they face Group B winners Batavia. Oin's Street may usually be the home of Kilbay Rangers, but for now it sets to be the home to Hamland's biggest match so far. A town more popularly known for being built on top of medieval ruins, Kilbay will set history aside as 43000 people head to see this mouthwatering world cup encounter.
Batavia have never got to this stage of a world cup before and face the tricky task with Hamland having home advantage. The Hammish team on the other hand will be looking to progress to the semi-finals for the first time. They will certainly want to forget their last quarter final encounter in 2008 where they crashed out to a 3-0 defeat to Craitland; however against a different team and on home soil may prove to be a difference.
Both team look set to play their previous teams, with Batavia's Jan Mioch failing a late fitness test and will not look to play any part of the game. Jodocus van Haltna therefore keeps his place as the Batavians look to play their 4-3-3 which has been effective so far in the tournament. Hamland on the other hand look set to play the 3-5-2 formation that has got them narrowly through. New Osjaton signing Andrew Miller is selected ahead of the experienced George Johnson as he looks to become a permanent member of the Hammish starting 11. Whilst Batavia have the threat of Jowi Bach up front alongside Jeroen van Veen and Jodocus van Haltna, the Hammish also have a striking duo of Andrew Miller and Benjamin Craig, as both sides will try to attack and score goals.
Looking at the two teams style of play and their line ups, the match is begging for goals and a high and close scoreline should be expected. A key factor for both these teams today will have to be the defence. Although both have numbers in attack, the two sides have looked fairly shaky at the back in the early stages and will signal this area as room for improvement. Continuing on with these problems, it should be noted that Batavia's Tom Meesen will need to bounce back after gifting Stormark a goal in their previous match, dwelling too long on the ball for Aki Mäenpää to steal and pass it into an open goal. Ray Kartiksti is also a subject of discussion as he needs to keep good discipline today. Should the New Kirrie Thistle defender get booked again, then he will miss a possible semi-final encounter with either Monovia or Natopia should Hamland progress.
Predicted Lineups:
Batavia (4-3-3): 1 T Meesen (GK) (capt), 10 R van Rethel, 11 N van Enen, 4 J Meesters, 3 A Hodzelmans, 8 P Leefma, 7 H De Boer, 9 G Reve, 2 J van Veen, 5 J Bach, 14 J van Haltna.
Hamland (3-5-2): 1 R MacLeod (GK) (capt), 2 R Kartiksti, 15 E Winters, 6 P MacKenzie, 23 B McVeigh, 16 H Antar, 10 J Scott, 5 E Martin, 7 R Brown, 11 B Craig, 21 A Miller.

Batavia 3-5 Hamland
Hamland staved-off a second-half Batavian comeback to book their place in their first ever World Cup semi-finals in front of their home crowd.
Appearing in their first quarter-finals since 2008, Hamland were absolutely outstanding in the first half and Batavia, in their first ever World Cup knock-out match, went in at the break needed a miracle. Hamland took a matter of minutes to get the scoring underway, almost scoring as quick as Toketi in the day's earlier kick-off, with Benjamin Craig crashing in a spectacular volley off the bar with five minutes gone. Immediately on the attack, it took a few attempts to break down the initial Batavian blockade but Billy McVeigh supplied the ball in from his wing. Andrew Miller was outmuscled by Nul van Enen and the defender's header dropped to Craig, who shaped-up to strike the ball with the outside of his boot from the edge of the "D". The shot went between Van Enen and Rien van Rethel, and swerved away from Tom Meessen's dive into the top-left corner to give Hamland the perfect start to rectifying their horrendous 3-0 loss to Craitland at the same stage in 2008.
The lead was doubled ten minutes after the restart, with Craig bundling in his second of the match from a low corner. McVeigh it was who put in the decisive ball, after winning a corner off Alejandro Hodzelmans. His corner was delivered in short, which foxed the defence, but Craig was there to knock it in off his shin, beating Hodzelmans on the post. And the game looked to be finalised as Hamland went 3-0 up with two minutes left of the half, when Andrew Miller added to Craig's two goals with a header. This time, the attack came down the Hamlanders' left, with Ronald Brown beating Van Rethel to put the cross in. The cross bent outwards and Miller leapt higher than Judoc Meesters to power the ball down past the unmoving Meessen and into the bottom of the net from 15 yards out.
Just as Batavia thought they were going in three goals down, Miller popped-up with his second and Hamland's fourth half a minute into injury time. Almost straight from the kick-off, Jules Scott won the ball off Jodocus van Haltna and played it through to Miller from the centre circle. Miller picked-up the ball, tapping it through Pieter Leefma's legs in the process and powering into the box shoulder-to-shoulder with Meesters. As the angle narrowed, the 17 year-old, who'll join Osĵätoņ Aztecs in December, unleashed a low shot which went under the 'keeper's left hand at the near post and into the goal.
Being 4-0 down and coming out after half-time, Batavia seemed to just play to their hearts' content and pulled a goal back within ten minutes of the restart. Jeroen van Veen got what only seemed to be a consolation at the time, latching-on to a accurate Pieter Leefma through ball between Eddie Winters and Ray Kartiksti, and tipping it past Rodney MacLeod with a quick toe-poke. With a bit more confidence added to them, the Batavians kept the ball a lot better than in the first half and seemed less worried about the consequences of risky passes, one of which lead to their second goal. Leefma again set-up Jeroen van Veen with an outstanding outside-of-the-boot pass with his left foot from the middle of Hamland's half. The chipped ball travelled over Peter MacKenȝie's head and dropped perfectly to Van Veen's right foot. Taking one touch to control it instantly, the Hänävissen-ó-Cräiteland forward knocked a shot through MacLeod's legs with his second as the 'keeper closed-in outstretched.
With a comeback looking well and truly on the cards, Batavia fluked another goal in the last five minutes. Roel van Zenderen, who replaced Jowi Bach earlier in the half, beat Kartiksti one-on-one in the box but was met by MacLeod rushing out. The 'keeper went to ground and got the ball, but Van Zenderen got the last touch and knocked it straight into the path of Midas Aalmans, who came on for Van Haltna with Van Zenderen, and the Atlantis Leyden striker tapped the ball into an empty net to put Batavia within a goal of equalising.
Unfortunately for the men in orange, Hamland sealed the game in the last minute after counter-attacking from a Batavian free-kick. Leefma was brought-down by Ronald Brown and lined-up to take the resulting free-kick himself. Tom Meessen was given permission from his manager to join the action in the Hammish box but his sprint was to no avail. Leefma's ball in was poor and got headed away by MacKenȝie on the edge of the area, who picked-out Billy McVeigh in the centre of the park. The newly-signed Mortis Mercatoria winger allowed a couple of Hamland players to join the attack and picked-out substitute Jamie Mearns with a cross-field ball which cleared the retreating Meessen. Mearns received the ball ahead of the last defender but began his run inside his own half, so was not offside. The Biulya äqi Jedu man controlled it, looked up and shot. Meessen was still well outside his box and could only watch as the ball flew over his shoulder before bouncing inside the six-yard box and up into the roof of the net, only metres away from his reach. Mearns was mobbed by his teammates, celebrating his first true contribution to the game and one that sealed the victory for the hosts.
Batavia bow-out gallantly, being only a kick away from taking this to extra time, having reached the knock-out stages for the first time in their history and Hamland go marching on to the semi-finals where they'll meet either Natopia or Monovia at St Josaphat's Stadium.

Craitland v Valencia Preview
Whilst Toketi advance in yesterday's big match against Stormark in the first quarter-final, they will find out their fate later today as either Craitland or Valencia will advance to face them in the semi-final draw. Whilst Craitland has triumphed twice by winning the world cup in 2007 and 2008, Valencia are in their first ever world cup and face the tricky task of stepping up and raising their game against a squad full of winning experience.
Craitland look to set out with a unchanged squad in their traditional 3-5-2, with Hanast Pellegrino still missing out a spot as Tommy Hjansen starts ahead up front alongside Freddie Gaärsen. Elsewhere, the Craitish look to have the threat down the wings with Manta Pellegrino and Markko Edmildón providing the width, as well as Toby Vorgensen being given the chance to attack from the centre of the pack.
Valencia in the meanwhile also name an unchanged squad. After beating Holzborg and causing an upset by beating 2006 champions Beaugium, they will be looking for more of the same against the double champions. They look set for a 4-5-1 formation with Manny Cabrera posing the threat up front, whilst packing the midfield with the likes of Francesc Hernández, Joao Ricardo and on form Juninho Santos. Once again Jesús Moreira will lead the Valencians out to battle, as they look to try and take the came to the Craitish.
Whilst the Valencians try to pack the midfield, the Craitish will be weary of the threat made by Valencian forward Manuel "Manny" Cabrera. The Craitish are expected to defend deep and prepare to dispossess the striker should the ball be played to him. Meanwhile, the Valencians may look to go for the wing play to match Craitland, or at least attempt to. Looking at the teamsheets on paper though, its looking all to Craitland, so their expectations is to deliver and progress to win.
Predicted Lineups:
Craitland (3-5-2): 1 J Vorgensen (GK), 2 J A Larsen, 6 P Demhivo, 3 J Hjansen, 7 Manta P, 13 Y Senovichi, 8 T Vorgensen, 5 H Herä, 11 M Edmildón, 10 F Gaärsen, 21 T Hjansen.
Valencia (4-5-1): 1 D Palazio (GK), 2 G Reveillière, 4 J Moreira (capt), 14 D Camachón, 3 L Alves, 7 S Javier, 21 J Ricardo, 19 F Hernández, 8 J Santos, 11 X Levas, 10 M Cabrera.

Monovia v Natopia Preview
With the other match going on at the Royal Union Stadium, Monovia and Natopia take on each other in an all CiboTap encounter as they look to progress to face hosts Hamland. Both of these sides are surprise progressions who are writing the history books for their respective nations as they have gone further than their previous experiences in 2006. With CiboTap powerhouse and defending champions Alexandria out, either one of these sides will have to progress to the semi-final to carry the CiboTap region alone.
Monovia look set to continue to play a rigid formation of a 4-4-1-1 with BäJ forward Lucas Zaya playing just behind pacy striker Armand Diarra, both of whom play their club football in Craitland. The team will hope that with Zaya and Diarra now both in the goalscoring books, the Monovians can roll on and win in style and progress to further heights in the competition.
Their opponents however opt not to stick and decides to twist by making a number of changes to the side that faced Novatainia in the final group game that resulted in a 0-0 draw. Mortis Mercatoria's new captain Giacomo Tedeschi will return to right back following a suspension following his red card early on in the tournament, demoting Mark Latiz back to the bench. Meanwhile, the Natopians also change things up front with Ilyas Chowdhury returning to the squad as Arthur Pavle also drops down and Finchley Walthamstow replaces Ismail Cunmulaj for his first ever start for the Natopian team.
Both sides will be eager and competitive and after playing each other in the Cibotap tournament regularly, we should expect a very evenly matched game as both sides will look to better each other and go forward to score. Although Natopia's squad has more world cup experience, it does look like the Monovians are going in on a high and in form as they maintain a 100% winning record from the groups. Many pundits believe that Monovia are now a surprise underdog for the tournament, and it could be a factor to lift the squad as they go into the quarter-finals brimming with confidence.
Predicted Lineups:
Monovia (4-4-1-1): 18 G Maurel (GK), 22 Z Emans, 6 D Große, 14 P Nikolic, 3 L Ducourtioux, 11 J B Alain, 13 R Zabavnik, 4 M Wojchiechowski (capt), 7 A Lalic, 21 L Zaya, 9 A Diarra.
Natopia (4-4-2): 23 G Concorde (GK), 17 G Tedeschi, 19 Leonardo D S, 5 R Azin, 2 J Benden, 22 F Walthamstow, 12 R Luxury-Yacht (capt), 14 J Shin, 9 J Murphy-Lee, 18 I Chowdhury, 21 M Stanescu.

Who decided that it was a good idea for Natopia to stand with a high defensive line and slow central defenders against a fast attacker?
