Jingdao's vast military and impressive coastal defence network was actively impaired by the increasingly manifest insanity of the Mingshi Emperor. Although the Imperial Jingdaoese Navy had been heavily committed to the Northern Mission to counter the Shirerithian garrison in Neo Patrova, an appreciable force of warships and submarines should have been available to assist in the defence of Jingdao's western seaboard from Shirerithian naval and airborne incursions. Instead, the navy remained inactive while Shirerithian corvettes and U-Boats launched a series of cruise missile strikes on military facilities, including munitions depots, air defence nodes and coastal defence missile batteries. This initial missile barrage was followed in short order by a coordinated attack consisting of three waves of strategic bombers targeting Port Nevermore (insert Jing name) and (insert other Jing towns from same province). The entire fighter strength of the Shirerithian 3rd Tactical Air Force, based in Natopian Arboria, had been committed to provide combat air patrols and top cover for the bombers. However, as with the passivity of the fleet, no opposition was encountered from the Jingdaoese air force and the bombers were able to conduct their obliteration raids upon Jingdaoese barracks and government buildings with impunity.
The raid on Port Nevermore inadvertently appeared to have struck a large chemical weapons stockpile located within the residential environs of the city resulting in mass casualties. It was however impossible to verify the chemical compounds involved or the casualties, except to note that they appeared to have been on a massive scale. This was further compounded by the unexplained destruction of several hospitals in the district after the raids had been concluded.
Later incidents were claimed by the SANE Joint Military Council (JMC) to be part of a cynical campaign by the Mingshi Emperor, utilising fanatical monks and Tegong agents from the Imperial Household, to target his own populace under the cover of SANE military actions. The Emperor's reasons for doing so have been the subject of much speculation, his increasingly doubtful sanity not withstanding. Yet it appears that, concurrent with the purges, the Emperor's paranoid mistrust of his own subjects meant that he considered himself to be as much at war with them as with the hostile coalition of foreign powers.
With the death of the Mingshi Emperor and the assistance of Calbion, Jingdao was able to stabilise its strategic situation and recover Penguin Island, which had been briefly occupied by an Alexandrian expeditionary force. Although the conflict had been poised to escalate dramatically, neither side had a particular appetite to press the war to its logical conclusion and instead, via the mediation of Stormark, a general armistice agreement was concluded which ended the armed conflict with the restoration of the status quo antebellum.
The War of Lost Brothers
Main Article: War of Lost Brothers
An obscure and trivial confrontation between two minor states, the Florian Republic and the Kingdom of Coria, escalated into a major regional war after the Imperial Republic saw in the clumsy behaviour of the Florian Government an opportunity to disrupt the unity of the USSO.
The eccentricity of the Florian regime, which had established itself on the eastern frontiers of Apollonian Jingdao, had manifested itself in a number of bizarre incidents that culminated in the fascinatingly catastrophic mishandling of a minor secessionist movement which led to thousands of deaths and the displacement of up to 800,000 civilians. Shirerithian diplomats began to influence the Florian President, Edwin Farrar, into distancing the Republic from the USSO whilst at the same time moving significant forces into the country under the guise of providing assistance to suppress far-right agitators under the leadership of Jeremy Spencer, who was himself ironically funded and directed by the Shirerithian ESB Group.
The construction of a powerful radar site and gravship hangers at Dragonmoor International Airport also convinced the Jingdaoese that something nefarious was afoot not far from its eastern frontier. The more paranoid amongst Jingdao's army first clique argued that Shireroth, far from decolonising as it was at that time proclaiming, was seeking to invent new ways to encircle Jingdao.
The assassination of the King of Coria by an alleged Floroserb caught both the Florian and Shirerithian governments by surprise. Jingdao meanwhile, sensing an opportunity to remove a threat, supported the Corian government and issued its own ultimatum to the Florians. Threatened by invasion from Jingdao and the Micras Balkans, the Florians accepted a Shirerithian offer to establish a protectorate relationship and to integrate its armed forces into a combined allied command structure. As a precaution the allies took the preliminary step of reoccupying Xhusovo to remove a gap in the line of defences being constructed to face Jingdao.
It took Shireroth twelve days to occupy Xhusovo, it would take the Jingdaoese sixty-five days to expel them in turn, mainly due to a defiant last stand by the Freedom Division in the ruined city of Hull. For the Shirerithians it had been a successful delaying action, which augured well for the main battle to come, but for the Florian government - inexplicably - it had seemed a catastrophic defeat to which the only possible response was prompt and abject capitulation. Forgetting, seemingly, that he'd signed over responsibility for foreign policy to the Shirerithians, President Farrar had dispatched negotiators to the Jingdaoese camp. Unimpressed, the Shirerithians appointed a High Commissioner to the Florian Republic, doing so in order to try and ensure that at least someone vaguely sensible was in charge.
There then followed the amusing expedient whereby the Florians tried to avert invasion by holding an election. Under dubious circumstances, President Farrar found himself out of office and soon in jail, whilst the Presidency passed to Jessica Smith, whose Liberal Party had come third in the last properly organised elections. Doubling down on efforts to capitulate, the Florians armistice negotiators were authorised to sign the Treaty of Chuán Ké, which relinquished the Florian Navy to Jingdao and a strip of land to the Jing puppet state of Hondon whilst making absurd concessions to Jingdao concerning the Florian Republic's own domestic political life before a single Jing soldier had even crossed the Frontier.
Genuinely appalled at the cravenness displayed, the Shirerithians issued draconian decrees suspending Florian autonomy and appointing Jeremy Spencer as President. Jessica Smith's response, under the pressure of a pro-Jing movement in the capital, Northcliff, was to sanction the extra-judicial murder of Jeremy Spencer, who was at that time still in custody for the debacle that was the Flexit Referendum. The Shirerithian response to this act of rebellion was swift and single-minded in its brutality; a cruise missile strike targeted the Florian Navy in port, crippling the republic's sole aircraft carrier, whilst simultaneously armed troops of unknown origins, by wearing Natopian uniforms without identifying insignia, began a targeted programme of killing directed at Florian law enforcement and border control officials along the southern border with the Most Serene Union's demesne of Saint Andre. In the north of the country meanwhile, a cabal of "Pro-Treaty" officers, either disgusted with the leadership of the new liberal government or else suborned by Shirerithian bribery and blackmail, staged a brutal putsch against the Florian Government, capturing the Parliament and storming the Presidential Palace after days of bitter fighting. This coup triggered what was in effect a civil war, turning Florian against Florian, and opened the way for the 2nd and 3rd Field Armies to advance into the Florian Republic unopposed. The Pro-Treaty Forces, having taken control of the capital, now found themselves besieged.
The Siege of Northcliff was long and bloody, but - without relief from the Shirerithian forces occupying the southern third of Floria - its outcome was never in doubt. Only General Lambert and a small group of fellow conspirators was able to successfully flee from Northcliff International Airport before it was overrun and shared the fate of the sacked city. In the aftermath of the siege the Florian Government once more attempted a volte face by signing the Armistice of Blyth with the Shirerithian Imperial Government. It was the turn of the Jingdaoese now to be unimpressed, and a wave of arrests and massacres were unleashed in order to remind the Florians as to where their allegiance now laid. In consequence of which, the rift between pro and anti treaty Florians remained unhealed and forces loyal to General Lambert continued to fight alongside the Shirerithians as the battles for Dragonmoor and Fosvalos began.
With the Florian Republic now a torn and blood-soaked wasteland, the war began to spread to other fronts - in Dalmacija, Batavia, and Carama Bay Jingdaoese and Shirerithian air and naval forces clashed on a scale unmatched in modern times. Natopia, long distracted by its own crisis had entered the war on the Shirerithian side, redressing the imbalance in naval supremacy and adding an array of orbital platforms to Shireroth's plethora of airborne and gravimetric vehicles. The conflict began to take on global dimensions and outran, increasingly, the command and control capabilities of its combatants. Elsewhere, the calamitous eruption of a volcano in the Brettish Isles gave the Shirerithians the opportunity to begin mounting opportunistic attacks on USSO shipping in the Great Western Sea. Whilst accruing to the Shirerithians some short term benefits in terms of plunder, the move brought the USSO closer to mobilising its full military and industrial might in support of Jingdao.
As the year 1655 reached its mid point it was clear that the conflict was developing towards becoming a world war in the truest sense, with global hegemony at stake.

Notes

The Sxiro-Jingdaoese Confrontation is a period of protracted strategic tension between the Imperial Republic of Shireroth and the Jingdaoese Empire concerning the fate of the former Duchy of Kildare which broke away from the Imperial Republic as the Apollonian Republic of Shireroth East (A.R.S.E.) before being subsumed into Jingdao. Although the original Shirerithian position was one of meek acquiescence during the reign of Kaiser Redquill, marking a low point of appeasement in Shirerithian history unparalleled since the reign of Kaiser Mog in antiquity, the subsequent annexation and reconfiguration of the A.R.S.E. by Jingdao, and that Empire's subsequent, widely perceived, expansionist and hypernationalist tendencies rekindled in a Shirerithian nationalism and a desire to curb the growth of Jingdaoese power and, if the opportunity presents itself, to restore Kildare to its ancient standing as an integral Imperial State of Shireroth.

Background

Course of the conflict

Kildari Secession

 • Treaty between the Allied Forces and the Feudal Faction[1]
 • Jingdaoese Takeover

Cold War

Following a deterioration of relations in the wake of the Hammish Civil War, culminating in a Jingdaoese psyops provocation[4][5] and a retaliatory Shirerithian cyber attack[6], reciprocal declarations of war were made in the year 6448 ASC.[7][8]

The War of Jingdaoese Immolation

Main Article: War of Jingdaoese Immolation

Alternatively titled the War of Nicki's Minaj after the video which led to the Jingdaoese declaration of war. The Jingdaoese war-effort seemed to be primarily preoccupied with the extermination of its own restive populace[9], while the declared Shirerithian war objective was the extirpation of Jingdaoese culture and heritage from the continent of Apollonia and the creation of a new independent Kildare in personal union with the Imperial Republic[10].
