The Democratic Environmental Society of Senya, often referred to as Senya, is a small micronation in western Apollonia. The nation borders the Natopian territory of Arboria to the north, Jingdao to the west and south and has coastline along Lake Lamantia to the east. The nation also contains two territories, in the Territory of Lamantia, an autonomous area comprising the old Fort Kolgrad region on Lake Lamantia and Senyan Arboria, that in total constitute the majority territory, and Ranentsi in northern Keltia.

History

Senya became an independent state following its recognition by the MCS council on 24 June 2012[1], having submitted its application on 17 June 2012[2]. The new Senyan state engaged in informal diplomacy with other nations via projects, such as the ill-fated Trans-Apollonian Railway[3]. Senya annexed Ranentsi on 21 May 2016, marking the country's first territorial outpost outside of Apollonia.

River Warrior War

Due to increasing sectarianism in the far-west of the country, however, the River Warriors' Autonomous Region was established on 7 August 2012[4] to quell tensions between the ethnic minority River Warrior people and the Senyan government, with the Senyans agreeing to respect the rights of the Rivorian people.

During the uprising in neighbouring Kildare and the subsequent establishment of the Apollonian Confederation, Senya notified the Apollonian Confederation of its intentions to send troops slightly into Apollonian territory in order to protect the Senyan border. However, the Apollonians viewed this as an act of aggression.[5]

Geography

A woodland in Senyan Arboria. Much of Senya is covered by forests.
The coast on the southern shore of Lake Lamantia, around 60km from Redditch.

Senya is located in western Apollonia between the latitudes 32° and 41° N and the longitudes 58° and 65° W, with a total area of 1,224,576km2, roughly similar in size to South Africa. Senya is split in two climate-wise, with the western half of the country being mostly flat woodland with some semi-arid areas in the south-west. The eastern half of the country is covered in much thicker evergreen forests and contains much more ragged areas. These areas of forest and mountains continue into Senyan Arboria towards Lake Lamantia, which is located at a high altitude. Along the southern border exist the edges of the mountain ranges that dominate central Apollonia. The southern border with Jingdao is largely demarcated by these mountains. There are also mountains along the northern border with the Natopian territory of Arboria.

Senya is a landlocked nation, although several important rivers run through the country, most notably the River Barnaby, which passes through Lake Tilos near Eprat. Senya does have coastline along the shores of Lake Lamantia, which allows access to the Northern Sea via the Camoleo River. Lake Lamantia is located at a relative high altitude, which can lead the lake partially freezing during winter, however during the hot summers the lake is suitable for beach holidays. The mountains also provide for recreational opportunities with hiking during the summer and skiing and other winter sports during the winter. The coastline along Lake Lamantia is dominated by high mountains which rise high out of the water. Although most of the Lamantian population live in lakeside communities, the vast majority of the Lamantian coast is dominated by rugged terrain. The mountains extend south into the rest of Lamantia and further into Jingdao and Apollonia beyond.

The Senyan government has a record for positive environmental preservation, with national parks covering much of Senya, including the Senyan Arboria national park, Tsännerlauger national park and the Fort Kolgrad animal reserve. There are also a number of regional parks and conservation efforts.

The territory of Ranentsi runs along a valley between two areas of mountains in Northern Keltia. As a result, the territory is split between a humid continental climate at the bottom of the valley, whilst the higher-altitude mountains on each side experience the Alpine tundra climate.

Climate

Senya's climate.
  Humid continental climate
  Oceanic climate
  Cold semi-arid climate
  Alpine tundra climate

Senya's proximity to the coast, central position between the polar regions and the tropical regions, in addition to its proximity to the mountain ranges of central Apollonia gives it a quite varied climate. Most of the country has an oceanic climate, featuring mild winters and summers. Some areas of the country (notably in the south-west) have a cold semi-arid climate, featuring warm but dry summers and mild winters. To the eastern fringes of the country is a small zone of a humid continental climate, which features hot summers but cold winters, often with high amounts of snowfall. The humid continental climate is common across much of Senyan Arboria and Fort Kolgrad.

Politics

President

The President of Senya is the highest political office in the country. The president is elected every five years, and leads the nation primarily in foreign affairs. He/She can veto legislation put forward by the National Democratic Forum, and can submit their own legislation. The role of the president is largely ceremonial in regards to domestic affairs but they have a much more stronger hand in foreign affairs, as they have to power to appoint and dismiss ambassadors, conduct talks with foreign leaders and can use Executive orders on issues pertaining to foreign affairs only. The President's powers are limited by the National Democratic Forum, who can pass a motion of no-confidence, which would trigger another presidential election. However, this has never happened.

The current President is Barnaby Hands of the Senyan National Party, who was elected in 2010 and subsequently re-elected in 2015.

National Democratic Forum

Ystëna Denisenka, the current Prime Minister of Senya.

The National Democratic Forum is the parliament of Senya and is elected every two years. It comprises of 500 members, with 448 representing Senya proper, 49 representing Fort Kolgrad and three representing Ranentsi. Within each region, elections are held via proportional representation, to gather who wins the seats available. The National Democratic Forum is intentionally set up to try and avoid a single party from dominating and ensure that all views are represented fairly on the national stage.

Currently, there is a ruling coalition between the Centrist Party and Liberty Senya, with the centrist party's NDF leader Ystëna Denisenka as prime minister. In situations where one party has not reached the overall majority required for majority rule, the Prime Minister will be the leader of the largest party in the coalition that forms after the end of the election.

To vote in a National Democratic Forum election, one must be at least 16 years old, in a fit mental state, and must show signs of political engagement and genuine intelligence. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, be fluent in both Senyan and English, have a university degree in a course related to politics and pass all the other test for a regular voter.

Foreign relations

Since joining the Micronational Cartography Society, Senya has maintained a policy of strict neutrality in Micrasian affairs, and has largely refused to join other inter-Micras organisations. Senya has only ever signed official treaties with three other Micrasian nations, namely Elwynn[6], Juclandia[7] and Tiana[8].

Despite of its neutral policy, Senya has worked with other nations on several projects, including the failed MSEO project to send a probe to Tarsica, in which Senya constructed a spaceport in Fort Kolgrad as a launch base.[9]

Recently, Senya has begun engaging more with neighbouring countries, such as Gerenia and Natopia.

Human rights

Senya constitutionally grants human rights to all citizens and foreign visitors and is widely seen as a socially liberal society, with same-sex marriage and adoption being legal, enshrined rights for free speech in law and for having a fair judicial system.

However, Senya is also accused of denying democratic opportunities to people with lower intelligence and has routinely suspended the publication of newspapers and magazines, though Senya claims this is only done when they sensationalise political stories or show bias in election season. Senya additionally has strong 'anti-degeneracy' laws, preventing people engaging in certain behaviours. Senya officially retains the death penalty for certain degenerate behaviours, though nobody has even been executed in the country.

Senya has been accused by Jingdao and Pro-Jingdaoese Rivorians of trying to cause a famine in the River Warriors by deliberately destroying crops by spraying them with chemicals and controlling and withholding the food supply. Senya has also been accused of supporting the Rivorian Liberation Army, which has committed terrorist attacks in the River Warriors area.

Economy

Senya is a highly developed country with a stable and prosperous economy. However Senya has been highly resistant to foreign interference in its economy, with nationalised companies dominating many industries, along with a considerably high amount of government interference within the economy. The government has a standardised domestic economic system which is considerably different from standard capitalism. The state often sets prices for commodities and refuses to allow properties to be bought and sold amongst other policies. The state often makes money abroad through its various foreign investments, as domestically it does not need to pay for things to be built.

Energy

Ƨozvɏa nuclear power station is the largest in Senya.

Over 99% of Senya's energy needs are met by renewable energy sources. Senya has a ban on the use of non-renewable power stations, with strict regulations effectively banning oil, natural gas and coal from being used, though oil is permitted in the manufacturing of several materials. Senya is largely dependent upon nuclear power, with four plants operational throughout Senya and Lamantia and another plant open in Ranentsi. Together, these produce around 80% of all Senya's energy. Some rivers along coastal parts of Lamantia and the Barnaby river are dammed to source hydroelectric power, whilst some private residences also use solar and wind power to generate electricity.

All of Senya's nuclear and hydroelectric power stations are nationalised, and account for 98% of the commercial and 93% of the non-commercial energy supply.

Transport

Air

Svorgas International Airport is Senya's largest airport, flying to 69 destinations across Micras.

Senya has a thriving aviation industry, with Air Senya being one of the most reputable airlines in Micras, whilst Svorgas International Airport, the country's largest airport, is used by around 16 million people every year, around twice the population of Senya. Air Senya is a publicly owned company, and also runs Air Senya Gotzbog, the flag carrying airline of Gotzborg.[10]

Lamantia Airlines, based in Colgrad, is Senya's largest private airline, primarily serving destinations in Lamantia. It primarily deals with package holiday tourism, with summer destinations concentrating on coastal resorts along the shores of Lake Lamantia, with its winter operations primarily focusing upon the winter resorts in the southern mountains.

Rail

Senya has an extensive high-speed railway system that stretches across the country. High speed trains link the eight largest cities in the country, whilst intermediate lines have trains that stop at more localised and rural stations. All lines utilise overhead electric cables. The six biggest cities in Senya additionally have their own metro systems. 61% of people use a metro during their commute to work, whilst 57% of people use the railway network to get to work. The rail network is owned and operated by the Senyan government under the public company Senyan Rail. Discussions of extending the network to neighbouring countries such as Arboria, Dura and Gotzborg has been discussed, with a Trans-Arborian Railway connecting Senya to Arboria and Gerenia currently being discussed.

Fort Kolgrad and Ranentsi also have rail links. Fort Kolgrad's network is run by Senyan Rail and is extensive, linking all populated settlements with a relatively high speed network. Ranentsi's networks are older and weaker, and rely on older rolling stock. Ranentsi's network contains one line, running from Kyustendil to Kriva. Ranentsi's railway is run independently of Senyan Rail, though a takeover is planned.

Road

By contrast to rail transport, the road network in Senya is very poor. In cities and town roads often are just used by busses and private vehicle ownership is low, whilst in the countryside small paved roads are quite common, but they are often windy and more suitable for cycling. There are some motorways existing between the main Senyan cities and in Fort Kolgrad, however most people travel across the country by either train or air. Car ownership in rural areas is estimated to be around 71%, whilst in urban areas it is estimated to be as low as 49%.

Demographics

The population of Senya is around 9,500,000 (roughly similar to that of Austria), giving the country a population density of around 7.76 people per square kilometre (roughly similar to that of Russia). Despite the country's low population density, the majority of the people live in urban areas, with 69% of the population living in the ten most populous settlements. However, 26% of the population live in rural areas, defined by the Senyan government as an area with less than 10,000 people. The urban-rural split is more pronounced in Senya's autonomous territories however, with 85% of people in Fort Kolgrad and 91% of people in Ranentsi living in urban areas.

Languages

English and Senyan are the two most widely spoken languages in Senya and are the only two official languages in Senya. Senya is spoken by around 60% of the population as a first language, mainly in the west and central areas, whilst English is more prominent in the east, being the first language of around 35% of the population. On a local level, schools can choose which language the language of instruction is, but all schools must offer comprehensive second-language study of the other official language from Division 1 (age 6). All students must continue to study the other language as a second language until they graduate Division 10 (age 16). German is an official language in Fort Kolgrad whilst Ranentsian is official in Ranentsi. Senyan sign language is given special recognition by the government.

Some immigrant languages are also spoken in Senya such as Craitish, Norwegian and Rivorian.

In addition to Senyan and English, students in Senyan schools must also study a foreign language. Most Senyan students study Craitish as a foreign language, though some schools offer studies in languages such as Gerenian and German.

Religion

Senya is a heavily irreligious country with secularism being officially endorsed by the constitutions. Some international observers have noted potential human rights violations by the Senyan government in regard to the freedom of religion. All forms of religious clothing, ranging from crosses on necklaces to full-body coverings are illegal to wear in public and are punishable by a large fine and a sentence at a re-education camp. 100% of citizens report not believing in God, whilst 95% of citizens report not believing in any kind of spirit or life force.

Despite Senya's legal and many individual's personal objections to religion and religious belief, many old churches and temples remain open and are looked after by societies, often as museums, whilst the freedom of belief on a personal level is widely respected.

Ethnicity

Senya is largely homogeneous, with the Senyan and English populations of the country both being of the Senyan ethnic group. Senyans are largely tall, with the average male being 187cm and the average female being 172cm tall, whilst also having very pale white skin. Green and blue eyes dominate as does brown hair. Whilst blond hair is not uncommon, completely jet black hair is exceedingly rare amongst ethnic Senyans. Ginger hair is relatively common amongst females.

In Fort Kolgrad, people are more closely related to Tianans and Patrovans, which has given them darker hair and slightly darker (though still white skin), whilst Ranentsians tend to have the darkest skin and predominantly have black hair.

Smaller ethnic groups exist in the country, particuarly Craits (~200,000) and Gerenians.

Education

Students relaxing on the campus of the University of Svorgas.

All Senyans are required by law to be in full time education between the ages of six and 18, with most Senyans attending a state school, with just 4.6% of students enrolled at private schools. Pre-schooling is very rare, though many nurseries exist around the country where students mostly play, but also learn basic things such as reading, writing and basic mathematics. Schools years are known as "divisions", and begin in the September, and end at the end of May the following year, with December also being a holiday for the winter. Division 1 is the first year of schooling, for children aged 6–7. Divsions 1–7 take place in primary schools, with children going into High School to start Division 8 at the age of 13. Division 10 (ages 15–16) are the final year of high school, after which students can go to either an academic or a vocational college for an additional two or three years (in academic colleges these are referred to as Divisions 11 and 12). School days generally last for six hours and include five lessons of an hour length (though these are much more fluid during Primary School), with an hour lunch break and another 15 minute break in the morning. Students take subjects mandated by a national curriculum, but individual lessons can be tailored to classes. There are no exams until Division 10, where students earn marks based on a mixture of coursework and examinations (depending on the subject). Following Division 10, students must make a choice on where they should go for college.

Tertiary education in Senya is held amongst seven different universities; the University of Senya, the University of Svorgas, the University of Tiga, the University of Dyas, the University of Jogasim, the University of Eprat and the University of Moroni. Around 40% of students attend university.

Culture

Senya has a distinct cultural identity based a shared sense of what being a Senyan involves, inspired by the romantic nationalist movement, with Senyan romantic nationalism still being a major force in modern Senya. Senyan culture blossomed with nationalist efforts to achieve an independent identity in the areas of literature, art, music and sport.

Senya Day is celebrated annually on 27 March, and is usually accompanied by big festivities. Men and women wear traditional costumes known as Znerĵarĵe. In cities, a parade is usually held, whilst in the countryside, village fêtes are held.

Senyans are known for their hospitality, and whilst many Senyans may appear reserved, the vast majority will go out of their way to help people.

Sports

Senya is known internationally as a sporting nation, with many citizens regularly playing sport. Association football is by far the most popular sport in Senya both in terms of participants and supporters. Handball, Ice Hockey and Rugby League all have large followings as well, whilst Cycling, Sailing and Skiing are extremely popular recreational activities.

Many sports run domestic competitions with Senyan teams competing internationally in a variety of sports. Traditionally, Lamantia and Ranentsi field their own teams in international sport, with Ranentsi also running their own domestic leagues.

Football

Football is by far the most popular sport in Senya, with some international commentators noting Senya's almost religious obsession with the sport. Most businesses do not operate between the hours of 1pm and 7pm on Saturdays to make way for football. The national team is considered to be one of the strongest on Micras, having finished runners-up at the 2017 FMF World Cup and having won the 2016 Copa Apollonia. The Senyan League is regarded as one of the strongest leagues on Micras and has a massive international following, and players from Senya, such as Alesandrœ Danetskë and Barnaby Hands have become international superstars. Senya hosted the 2013 Copa Apollonia and the 2017 FMF World Cup successfully.

The Senyan domestic football league is one of the most popular and strongest on Micras, with the Senyan League having produced three champions of the AEFA Champions' League. Leading clubs include Jogasim Revolution, Dyas Scitenhima Ĵets and Svorgas Scitenhima.

Senyan football fans are widely credited with popularising the Ultras culture across Micras, with all professional clubs in Senya having some form of Ultras group. The most well known ultras group in Senya are Naldas, who support the national team. Ultras often using pyrotechnics, tifos and chanting to support their team.

Rugby

Rugby is the third most popular sport in terms of participants and the second most watched sport in Senya. Though traditionally Rugby Union has been more popular, Rugby League has gained significant popularity in recent years, primarily due to the national team's success. The national team won the FMRL World Cup for the first time in 2015.

Music

Senya has an extensive musical scene, primarily grown out of Svorgas. Traditional folk music is found across Senya and still remains popular, especially in traditional ceremonies and national holidays. Folk music has informed the sound of modern music, with genres such as folk metal being especially popular. Metal music in general is popular, with rock and indie music being more mainstream. Pop music, as it would be considered in other nations, is relatively unpopular. Electronic music has a small subculture surrounding it primarily in the cities.
