Hamland was started on the 12th of September 2006 when the current King came up with the idea of claiming 1 square centimeter of land and using that to secede. This plan quickly grew and as Hamland started as a secessionist nation, it began to have simulationist aims.
Hamland was started as a Hampire, where the Hamperor is the supreme ruler of the state, but this was scrapped and Hamland became the Socialist state of Hamland in late 2006. After a period of Hamland nearing it's end, Hamland restored the Hamperor and a "Trimocracy" was formed where the Hamperor, the Prime-minister and the leader of the opposition would get to vote on decisions. This plan did not last long.
In August 2007, Hamland was restored to a Hampire, and began to claim land on Micras. In December 2007 the country was renamed "the Kingdom of Hamland". The country grew to include other regions such as Taeland before the creation of the United Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth was a political union of all of the lands under the crown of Hamland. These included Greenuk, Scottania, Kydros, Taeland, Hamland, Iridia and Monovia. The United Commonwealth lasted a number of months but was weakened by the numerous forums which were being upheld and the inability for the Commonwealth to create any central policy or culture. It was a fairly weak state in international affairs and held little influence over the direction of Micras.
The only major international conflict the UC was involved with was a brief encounter with Babkha and nations which held an aggressive policy towards Katyusha. Hamland expelled the citizens and diplomats of the alliance and was met with a brief crisis where the Babkhans dispatched a boat to the edge of Hammish waters. Nothing came of the situation, but Hammish people are still known for their animosity towards the state of Babkha.
Following the dissolution of the United Commonwealth, Hamland once more became a Kingdom. The Kingdom of Hamland had lost much territory to Ocia who became the main rivals of Hamland on Keltia. Ocian-Hammish relations were generally very hostile with each country coming into existence at a similar time and growing at a similar rate. As well as this, the leaders of the respective countries were both openly critical of each other. The territories of Monovia and Iridia eventually came under Ocian control with Hamland eventually negotiating control over Hammish Monovia. The Iridian Islands, referred to as Kydros in Hamland, eventually became part of the Region of the Islands under Hammish rule, but Iridia was never reclaimed but instead became part of Gralus.
Much of the activity during these years was surrounding the 'Cold War' with Ocia. Numerous incidents occurred such as the shooting down of a missile over Hammish territory, the limited intervention of Hamland in the Amokolian war and the support for Ashkenatza and ensuing alliance at a time where Ocia was at war with Askhenatza. At this time too, Hamland's territory expanded to include Passas which later became an autonomous region within Hamland. The 'Cold War', as it is called now, is still a point of national identity and pride for Hamland who have since erected a monument to the great struggle and eventual victory of Hamland.
For some time the country was in a state of serious inactivity. During this time the King resigned as a result of other commitments thus leaving the country to the management of the Seneschal Duke J. It was thanks to Duke J that the state of Hamland still exists to this day and so he is seen as a national hero in the state following his investments into Hammish Football and liberation of the Virgin Islands.
Today Hamland has developed a more diplomatic and less expansionist approach to international relations. It enjoys very friendly relations with Ashkenatza and has put much work into the development of the Hamland national football team and the Ham50 stock market. Hamland reformed the old Kingdom into the Commonwealth of Hamland. The Commonwealth was part of a reorganisation of the state which allowed regions the previous autonomy of the UC but with the simplification of a united forum and central administration. The reforms have led to advances in the state such as the reuniting of Monovia, the development of a membership policy and the beginning of a new party system.
Hamland's history is notable for its exceptionalism. Hamland has always tried to do things in a different manner from Micras and develop a different approach to issues such as economics and governance. This made Hamland a fairly isolationist state in its early days but has bred a distinctive system of government for the country.
Hamland came into existence when the Hammish People's settled in the Hammish Peninsula. They formed their own state which eventually got independence and became a Hampire.
Hamland was once known as Caput on Micras. It was ruled by several nations including Slobovia, Baracao and the Grand Commonwealth who ruled Caput for many hundred years. It was an important peninsula at the end of what we now call the river "Caledon". Hamland's position made the river very accessible for nations for trading, allowed the river to be blocked and also had good access to the open sea making it a good international port as it had access to the north, west and south by sea and could trade inland via the river Caledon. The Hammish people were generally seen as an entrepreneurial people caring about money and building their nation through working with others rather than struggling by themselves. Kings came and gone and Hamland was seen as little more than a port. A long time ago it was well known that Caput was split into two for political reasons, meaning the east side began to prosper more than the west. The east was controlled by the Communist nation of Baracao. This meant a divide in Hamland's people, but after a while there was a resolution wherein the nation was and Hamland was united, but their people were angry. The nation would only last a dew years under complete control of Baracao.
Hamland originally included half of the Virgin Islands, but the last nation to rule Hamland was to leave the Virgin Islands to be claimed by anyone. The Grand Commonwealth crumbled and with it fell Hamland and a time of uncertainty arose where there was no real nation wanting to co-operate with Hamland. This meant that the Virgin Islands were claimed by New Brittania and the nation was left leaderless for many years.
The empty years
Hamland during this time had several internal conflicts. The first was the war of Caput, this war involved two clashing peoples wanting to choose who Hamland should belong to. The East were pro-imperialist and the west was pro-independant. [expand] The war lasted about 5 years when there was a resolution that Hamland should be split into regional duchies.
The Regional duchies had several wars over land, some trying to unite it and some trying to just get more land. All of these dukes were out for their own gain and nobody seemed to unite them.
Rise of Nationalism
The Hammish people were united by a call from a man called Lewis. He brought the people together during the time of the Dukes, his plan was to unite Hamland not by uniting the dukes but by creating a new society altogether based on a new values system. The early incarnation was co-lead by Matthew Keily and Andrew Henderson. They got the people of the duchies to rebel and bring down the regional governments to establish a new one. The Dukes fell as they lost support and the people of the duchies fell fed up their greed. The Dukes fell in a 3 month rebellion when the new Republic of Hamland was establish, at this time there was not enough power behind it to make it a fully recognisable nation.
The movement though was brought down from the inside. The neighboring island of Taeland had declared itself independant after it's own revolution, but theirs was communist. They sent several forces over to Hamland to make the unstable nation a communist one. Unfortunately there was no support for it, and it turned into a conflict where the nation of Hamland had to fight off the Taeland oppressors. The war was eventually won by Hamland and the govenrment of Taeland was crippled. Hamland then rose as a democracy until it was decided that Lewis would be made King. This new Kingdom would be run under the principles of the Purple Movement, a movement of Hammish nationalism and a movement which said that a King should work for his people and not for himself. At this time a new political figure was rising within the HNP, the newly formed party, who was knighted a Duke. His name was Juan Teadoir.
Prosperity of the Purple movement/ rise of the Red Hand
The King and his Prime Minister built the country into a strong nation. Hamland hadn't been independent long before Tonaria asked to become a protectorate. Shortly after the nation of Taeland was granted land in the north after New Brittania controlled the Island of Taeland.
A time of power arose as the nationalised industries flourished, and the economy boomed. Hamland was a freindly popular nation that was meant to be great and a time of cheer was about the country. The new Socialism that had united the country was under the great leadership of Duke J and King Lewis. The Hamland National party rose to be the main party and was the only party to be in the country for a long time.
This time would not last forever. The land that was given to Taeland broke out in civil war as communists from the collapsed regime had begun to try and take controlled over the northern land. The rebellion was quelled by security forces in a war that lasted the largest part of a year. The Red Hand surrendered and soon more countries were asking to ally with Hamland.
The United Commonwealth
During the reign of the King, the Kingdom of Monovia fell into disrepair. Monovia's government was suffering and needed help as the King there was overthrown. The Purple movement of Hamland was well respected and the King of Hamland was asked to rule there. The Rule meant that Monovia was to join in a commonwealth with Hamland.
Afterward the Kingdom of Greenuk began to have a fall in productivity and they considered a regime change. They followed Monovia and in order to preserve the Fifth Isle; King Lewis Miller began his reign over Greenuk. Scottania soon followed after their King became good freinds and declared his own Purple nation.
Irídia was the last to join after the Emperor had become freindly with the King. The Commonwealth accepted Irídia and then there was a time where countries were working hard for the gain of the many. One problem was there, and that was the fact that some of the countries would not stay purple. Irídia was the first to leave when they found the UC was not strong enough. They were followed by Monovia who wanted to follow their roots and return to Ocia and President Matt Kovac who had been president in Monovia previously. At the time Monovia was handed over, it was in a stronger position than ever.
During this time, Greenuk had a fascist uprising. The Commonwealth managed well to suppress the fascists and soon Greenuk was on it's feet again. They themselves were not keen to leave the UC, but when the UC was formally ended the nations of Scottania and Greenuk united. Their governments collapsed and those nations were not to be seen for a long time.
Hamland's power returning
The breakup left Hamland in a difficult situation, but the Prime Minister and the King tried their hardest to push Hamland forward. Hamland soon managed to become a great sporting nation, where the Prime Minister's enthusiasm led Hamland to qualify for the World Cup and for the Rugby World Cup.
Economically the nation was strong as well as the rebuilding of Hamland's economy was swift and Hamland survived a crises that would have destroyed many countries. Hamland though was not a major player on the international stage and mostly ever condemned wars and stayed out of conflict
Hamland's rise internationally
Hamland was to suddenly become an important nation when the cold war broke out. The country of Katysha was being very aggressive and had joined with some Communist countries to forge an alliance. (see 2008 expulsion crisis)This was soon countered with an anti-communist faction of countries which wanted forced regime change. Hamland's values led the country to stand up for it's beliefs and say no to the major powers. The idea of such a small nation directly challenging the major powers led noble allies such as Col and Ocia to join in and say that what was happening was wrong. This began to forge a new force on Micras that stood for respect for other each other's choices and integrity.
Hamland is found near Passas, and is located along the River Caledon. The climate of Hamland is temperate, with the high mountains of the north supplying the water to New Kirriemuir and the central bogs giving water to the coastal cities.
The original nation consisted of 6 major cities; New Kirriemuir, Hamlet O'Groppa, Port Kilbay, Morfaga, Eel bay and Porapa (English = Caput). 5 out of 6 of these are on the coast of Hamland, and this is due to the large fishing industry to the coasts. Nowadays the country includes the Cities of the Hammish Region including Lindsmouth, Sal, Guul and Orno.
The Hammish capital, New Kirriemuir, is located where there was a large mining industry and is central to the largest; Trumpet, toastie maker and rubber chicken factories in the world.
Hamland's second city, Morfaga, is the main industrial city and is located in the North of Central Hamland.
Regions in Hamland
There is a current total of 13 regions within the Kingdom of Hamland. Ten are Hammish Provinces that receive the name of "Region of", while two of them are Autonomous Territories (Taeland and Passas) and two are Protectorates (Hammish Monovia and Virgin Islands). This was set according to the Standarization of subdivision of Hammish lands Act.
- Bel Air
- Central Hamland
- Hammish Monovia
- San Luis de Hamlandia
In 2012, the Virgin Islands became a Protectorate of the Realm, with all the privilegies derived from that.
Following the creation of the Commonwealth of Hamland in 2013 the administrations of these regions was reformed to:
- The Region of the Isles
- San Luis de Hamlandia
The most famous attractions in Hamland are "Salt Palace" and "Eel bay fort".
Eel Bay fort was built as a military base and was one of the most advanced of its kind int the old days. But now it's main use is to attract tourists, but areas are still used by the army of Hamland.
The Salt Palace is the residence of the King. This is the only palace of it's kind in Hamland and has two large domes on it. On the top of one dome is the flag of Hamland, and on the other is the flag of the Purple Movement. In the square there is a third flag which is the flag of the King which is only allowed for Royal or military use.
Hamland has a multiple party system, with the Hamland Nationalist Party, the Social Liberal Party and the Conservative Party.
Prime Ministers of Hamland include three politicians from different backgrounds.
