The Royal Union of Gran Islilla (Islillan: Unioncilla Real de la Gran Islilla, French: Union Royale de la Grande Îlette) is a dual monarchy founded in 2016 upon signing of the Treaty of El Portillo. Gran Islilla comprises the entire island of the same name, and consists of two monarchies: the Kingdom of Fernandilia and the Kingdom of Terre Verte, ruled by the same monarch: King Albertillo I.

Name

Gran Islilla translates to "Great Little Island" in Islillan Spanish. Islillans frequently add the diminutive endings -illo or -illa to words. The official French name of the country is "Grande Îlette", although the French-speaking population of the island generally call the nation "Grande Isle" (Great Island) or "Terre Verte" (Green Land).

History

Settlement of Gran Islilla dates back to 1977, when the northern shore of the island was colonised. The first settlers called the island "Gran Isla" (Great Island). The small towns along the coastline soon formed a state: the Republic of Northern Great Island (Spanish: República de la Gran Isla del Norte), which was in fact a loose union of towns and villages that enjoyed a great degree of autonomy. The Republic expanded southwards as new towns were founded, and by 1979 the northern half of the island was dominated by Northern Great Island.

In 1980, it was established a French colony in the southern end of the island, which at the time was uninhabited. The colony became the independent Kingdom of Terre Verte. Both Northern Great Island and Terre Verte attempted to take over the vacant lands. This led to minor conflicts, and to prevent a war, both nations agreed to divide the island in two parts. The negotiations began in 1981 and were extended until 1984, when a agreement was made. However, the agreement was provisional in nature, since a land stripe in the west of the island was still disputed by both parts.

The unresolved dispute led to a short war in 1986. The forces of Northern Great Island lacked on cohesion and were defeated. As a result of the conflict, Terre Verte annexed Campana (the disputed area, today Tres Jarcillas department), and the government of Northern Great Island fell. Then two separate successor states were founded: the unitary Gran Isla Republic, and the Kingdom of Gran Islilla. The Kingdom was created by Ernesto Ito, and rapidly gained followers, especially in the central and eastern regions of the island, while the republicans were strong in the north. After two years of conflict, the republicans were defeated by the royalists, and the Gran Isla Republic was dissolved in November 1988. The Kingdom's capital was moved from El Portillo to San Eusebio, renamed Villa Real. (To be continued)
