Re: Charter Amendment 11d - Open Council
You know, it's a little off topic, but am I the only one that is getting kind of fed up with this excuse being universally used and accepted? It's like we all loathe this hobby so much that if anyone accuses us of actually giving a damn about it, it's some sort of insult, and the only remedy is to just not give a crap about anything at all. And then we wonder why nobody is joining and people are always leaving.Cairney wrote:Or are we all taking, what is essentially a pretend world far to fucking seriously?

Indeed, it's one of the great micronational fallacies: when the shit gets too serious, complain about how "this isn't real" and "you're taking it to seriously".
Re: Charter Amendment 11d - Open Council
Honestly, what's wrong with taking things a bit too seriously? I think it would be nice if there was a little more seriousness. Because really, plenty of hobbies take themselves infinitely more seriously than we do. I mean, look at the SCA. They spend thousands of dollars on costumes and fancy tents and spend thousands of hours learning archaic skills to what; play pretend for a weekend! And do people say 'hey you're taking this too seriously?' No, they go 'that's effing cool' and they join up and there's hundreds of thousands of members across the globe who not only devote their time and money to their own little part of the hobby but gladly pay membership dues and event fees just to keep playing along. If micronationalism as a whole wasn't taken as such a sham by those who play we might, as was just stated, stop having people turn on their heel and run the moment they get a sight of it.

Re: Charter Amendment 11d - Open Council
Ok. Maybe I was wrong to say seriousness is a bad thing but it's not really what I mean't in my previous post. Having a passion for the hobby is by no means a bad thing but talking down to someone for something they didn't even realise they'd done instead of just correcting the problem and explaining why it was a problem. Then yeah, feel that is being far to serious. If it really was a problem then I'm fairly sure Josh wouldn't have opened to board. Or if it really was a problem and Josh had just made a mistake then I'm sure Craitman would have either closed the board or gotten Spangle too. But no, instead, Craitman just talked down to me and made it sound like I had just been oblivious to obvious guidelines. Which, if I'm honest pissed me off, and still does. Now I respect the position that Craitman holds and I respect that the MCS does have guidelines and standards to up hold. But considering the fact that the only reason behind the move of forum was to update the forum software [correct me if i'm wrong] then I still doubt that what Josh did broke any guidelines and standards. And I also doubt the fact that it'd need to be voted on by the council as;
This sub-forum shall be made viewable to all members and visitors of the MCS as of the date this amendment is enacted and shall remain viewable to all members and visitors indefinitely.
appears to state that the 'Finished votes' sub-forum will be made available and doesn't specify that that only means on this forum.
I suspect the really reason for Craitman being oh so outraged is, as he stated, Spangle didn't check with him first...
So to some up I suppose I would say, as a whole the community is far to serious now and far to miserable to at least be civil to each other.
I may be wrong, and by god I'm sure in the next hundred posts you're all going to tell me how so wrong I am, but all I know for sure is that this is certainly not the hobby I got into in 2005. I hope you all enjoy pulling apart my post, correcting me on my spelling and grammar and saying that I am just butthurt because Craitman called me out. Shame it'll fall on deaf ears as I sure as hell won't be here to hear it.

I'm not justifying patronization or condescension, those are counter to a community. But calling that taking it too seriously is misguided. Taking things seriously doesn't mean someone's being a jackass, they are not synonymous. I think those who find it easy to tear others down don't take into account the ramifications of their words. The fact that you're offended might mean that someone's not taking it seriously enough.

What does the Scottish Canoe Association have to do with this?King Ailin of Uantir wrote:I mean, look at the SCA. Taking into account the misunderstandings of context and tone in a couple of posts here, I agree with Guy.
