*Match verdict*

Hey everyone, Looking forward to a decent final again this year. From what I have heard Alexandria have a very slim chance once again of taking the title but I am sure there is some hope for the team who have never taken a cibotap title before despite getting to the final every year. Zandarijn were underdogs last year and surprised everyone by reaching the semi-finals but narrowly lost to Alexandria due to a late goal. This is definatly a match that will be considered payback for Zandarijin though they have not managed to get a strong result yet this year just narrowly taking victories against Natopia, Monovia and a draw against Kavalos. They have already suffered a defeat against Alexandria so will this be their chance to take it? I am expecting something big from Alexandria to be fair, due to the fact that they still have not won cibotap before.

Alexandria v Zandarijn

Cibotap has become a renowned competition for passion and excellence. This year is no exeption, Alexandria enter their third final which is unexpected due to them struggling early on this year. Zandarijn narrowly missed out on a lucrative world cup spot and a final place last year after being beaten by Alexandria in the semi-finals. This match could be considered payback by Zandarijn though they have already suffered a defeat at the hands of Alexandria once this year. Alexandria on the other hand will be expected to make something of this game, as they say "third-time lucky". This is sure to be a massive game but still no-one has managed to defend their title.

Post Re: Cibotap 2009
Damn busy lives, hectic schedules and unforeseen forum hackings, but here we are eventually; the final! This was simulated a while back on the computer by Marc, relaying the information to me via MSN, and is now transformed into a full-ish match report...

Quote:
Alexandria 2-2 Zandarijn (aet)
Zandarijn win 4-5 on penalties

A goalless 90 minutes were followed by an exciting 30 in extra-time and fourteen penalties before Zandarijn were crowned third CiboTap champions, leaving Alexandria to rue their missed chances yet again as another major title eluded them.

"Les Bleus" it was who controlled the match in normal time and the game could have ended in a whitewash if it weren't for some very poor finishing from their usually brilliant strikers. Although Alexandria were all over Zandarijn, their only real clear-cut chance occurred seven minutes before half-time. Tamer Modrem laid the ball through to Khalid Mohamed but before the Baudrix Bears striker could shoot, Peter Vandem slid in and took him out. Florent Lassana-Traoré stepped-up but instead of his usual assertive finishing, he blasted the ball over the bar. The teams went in 0-0 at half-time, with Zandarijn hoping for an influential team talk.

After the break, the same service as in the first half resumed. Alexandria created a good number of chances, only to shoot wide or have a good Kleusen save deny them. However, the Alexandrians' best chance came with just over an hour to spare. Florant Lassana-Traoré received the ball in the area and before he had any time to move, Peter Vandem brought him to the ground. This gave Alexandria their second penalty and Vandem a sending-off after his yellow for giving away the first-half penalty. Lassana-Traoré intended to make amends for his previous miss but, instead, repeated what had happened before and cleared the crossbar with his strike. The Club Imperiale man couldn't believe he had now missed two penalties in the same game and looked inconsolable in the area.

This good luck, on Zandarijn's part, spurred them on for the remainder of the game, creating a couple of chances which Diego Pedro had to deal with. William Tyas came closest when he blasted over a shot after a good one-two with Stephan van Hajn. Nothing from either side really looked like it was going to threaten the scoreline, mind, before Alexandria hit the woodwork a few minutes from time. Fábio González swung in a deep cross from a free-kick on his left wing and Mohamed rose up to head the ball down into the ground and off the far post before Jan de Wijnen cleared.

As the referee blew for full-time, while Alexandria were trying to compose themselves for another half an hour of play after having more than enough chances to have won the game already, Zandarijn made a change. Striker William Tyas was replaced by defensive midfielder Pavel Zenden to strengthen the Zandts' midfield and soak-up any Alexandrian pressure. However, the first thing one would not expect to see is a team scoring straight after they'd taken off a forward and replaced him with a defensive player, but that is exactly what happened. Almost directly after the restart, the ball bobbled up after a loose Alexandrian pass and Zenden, 35 yards from goal, decided to hit it. The strike, almost out of nowhere, took Pedro by surprise and flew into the top-right corner. Alexandria were stunned and proceeded with the kick-off still shaking their heads in disbelief. It didn't take Les Bleus long to pull one back though. Only four minutes after conceding a goal, Tamer Modrem equalised. The Crécy midfielder took possession of the ball in the Zandt half and dribbled a few paces before looking up and lashing it past Kleusen. Not quite as far out as Zenden's strike but from eighteen yards, the Alexandrian number eight's shot was worthy of all credit given, especially as his shot was placed brilliantly into the top-left corner from the opposite side of the box.

The fans were all on their feet, for different reasons, depending on who they were supporting, but their expectation wasn't met and the first half of extra-time ended with both teams playing "keep ball". The second was very much the same, with neither team wanting to commit to many attacks in case of being caught quickly on the break, which both teams now realised the other was rather good at doing. The Alexandrians went ahead for the first time all game two minutes from the end, with Mohamed scoring. Modrem won a free-kick on the right side and chose to take it himself, playing the ball into the near post. De Wijnen tried to head it clear but the ball only skimmed off the top of his head and went through to the far post. Krijsztijan Aawlzeczaa went for the kick, but hit it into Lassana-Traoré and Mohamed poked a foot out to steer the ball past Kleusen from six yards. Alexandria looked to have won it with barely two minutes remaining for Zandarijn to draw level. But Zandarijn were having none of that mentality and fashioned an attack straight from the kick-off. Gabriël Joors managed to force a corner off the leg of Cyril Kopaczewski. Daniël Lavan-Olsen took the corner from the right and managed to find, with his dipping cross, the run of Zenden. Zenden came through unmarked and right-sidefoot-volleyed the ball past Pedro's left hand from eight yards. A player who didn't even play a second of the game's original 90 minutes had now scored two in extra time. The whistle blew straight after Alexandria restarted, signalling the penalty shootout had come.
